clutch gone??

Can anyone please confirm if my clutch has gone or if its something else. I pulled out of a junction yesterday and put my foot down a bit. It felt as though it jumped out of gear and it would not pull though still in gear. I can now put it in all gears perfectly and let the clutch all the way up but not move, just a grinding noise. Ive been told its the clutch but wanna make sure before i buy one.

Just a thought, when you did the inner cv boot, how did you go about it?. It seems very strange that's its gone just after doing that. Even though the drive shafts look ok, are you sure the shaft hasn't popped out the cv joint? When you put the outer joint back on, did the splines go all the way in? Almost sounds like it was in a little bit, enough to get it to drive, but popped out.

Retrace your steps and double check everything.

Grab the driveshaft with wheel locked and see if there's any movement. Could just be the cv boot holding the shaft in what looks like the right position.

Nope.. same as having one wheel off the floor if you like.

If its safe to do, why not get someone to watch the shafts while you lift off the clutch in gear.. handbrake on very tight and just for a split second. If the shaft spins but the car doesn't then you know where you stand.

Just had a quick look and the shaft is deffo connected-the 6 bolts. I grabbed hold and wiggled it. Tiny bit of play, did the other side and its the same. Going off what my mate has said, it sounds like the splines on the clutch have shattered. My prediction is- due to me smashing the shaft to get it out to replace the inner boot has nackered the wheel bearing which in turn due to the vibration has done the clutch. Does that sound right or utter poooop??

It's a possibility, but wheel bearing would have had to be falling off to do that much damage. I know the inner joint is the bolts, but what about the outer joint. Did you knock the outer off and slide the inner boot on backwards? All I'm thinking is on outer joint there's a locking ring, sometime the joint won't go on and feels like the driveshaft is in the cv joint properly, but its not.

Once the driveshaft was off i didnt do anything at al with the outer joint. I slid the new inner boot on from the end it goes on. ( if that makes sense)............... Wooooooooooohhhhh, ive just realised., the locking ring on that holds the inner joint onto the shaft. I didnt put it on. Youve just saved me a lot of money. Thanks. Time to get in the bin and try and find this clip. Thanks thanks thanks. ha

Just been in the bin. Found the box it came in but not the bit i need. Ha. Gonna look on the drive in the morning. Bloody gravel stones, need a metal detector. I was gonna order a clutch in the morning. Thank f@*k for that. I d never have known if you hadnt said. I remember now, after i got the boot on i just slid the joint on then bolted it all back up. Minus the circlip. Worse case senario if i cant find it, ill go and buy the kit again. 17 quid. Thanks again.

Cheaper than I new clutch lol.. I think it doesn't help doing jobs like this in the winter. Seem to want to get it done as soon as possible and back in the warm lol

Maybe before you get buying bits, drop the boot off and carefully inspect the splines on the driveshaft, it shouldn't have don't any damage if ifs just popped out, but if its tried to re enter it can damage the splines.

I wish HTC's auto correct would stop putting spooned instead of splines lmao

Well, got up this morning and went out to find the circlip thing. weyhey, there it was in the gravel. Mechanic came at 5.30 and got on with the job. BUT, not a good result,-the friggin splines are goosed. So i now need a new driveshaft. booooo

Yeah, thats what i thought about the clutch. Just tryin to reassure myself that its still not that bad. lol. Any way, ive just started a new thread about driveshafts. Do you know if tdi ones are the same? Theres a vw breakers 5 mins away that has one. They look the same on the pic

So,- update,- rung the vw breakers down the road and they had a vr shaft. Nice. Got there and the inner boot was knackered. I said the gti ones are the same and he had one of those also. They are the same except the outer cv is slightly smaller. Anyway bought it and came home and fitted it. Back on the road. phew. I think/hope the cv should be ok even though its slightly smaller. Im gonna buy the proper vr one and keep it in the boot so if anything does happen ill just call the aa and get them to come and fit it. Also, as it turns out, i dont need a wheel bearing. The grinding must have been the inner cv. One less job to do.

Next small couple of jobs are a new auxiliary water pump as mine leaks and new crank sensor cos its occasionally a bitch to start when its warm.

And then.........
