I was wondering if anyone can help me . I know this is not a vr but need help with the wifes 1998 golf gti 2.0 8v . The clutch pedal went to the floor checked cable thats ok . So i went about removing the box only to find that these use a rod though the spline rather than a release bearing.

What i wanted to know is the rod meant to work under some sort of pressured system to work the clutch.

Thanks for any help in this matter

i know mate when i looked at. my old gearbox i couldnt really work out how it worked. on the side of the gearbox youll see the pivot arm for the clutch? that pushes the rod through all of the gears to th clutch plate. here it acts just the same as a release bearing on a VR. doubtful it will be that mechanism though, check the cable and the end mechanism, this can be a pain sometimes

If you remove the green cap on the end of the box you will see the actuating finger, this is sat on a splined shaft which in turn is moved by the clutch arm/cable

The splines are notorious for wearing and making the actuating finger unable to push the push rod into the pressure plate. Quite an easy fix tbh mate.

Have a look on here http://www.brokevw.com/ for a guide as to how to fix
