michael5556 247
As I was just driving to work my car developed a knocking noise when turning or slowing down, I am thinkin either cv joint or engine mount? It didn't do it when accelerating.Any ideas?
Bigjobbo 0
Could be the CV, may also be ball joint, t.r.end.wishbone bush, arb link etc. CV's make a very distinct noise and more noticable on full lock.
michael5556 247
I also think the top mounts may be on their way so could it be them or would that only be on full lock?
bungy 2
Top mounts tend to be noticeable at slow speed on an uneven road. Driving slow on full lock is usually drive shaft / CV.
michael5556 247
Ok will check later on or tomorrow, thanks for the help guys
DanH 1
dont think it will be top mounts...mine were rubbing on bonnet before i changed them didnt knock tho....
michael5556 247
Knocking got worse on way home from work, but it does not do it when turning, only way driving, mostly when slowing down. It's not engine mounts, could be top mounts or a bushing, sounds like it is bouncing up at down with nothing cushioning it. Will jack it up tomorrow and have a look.
tjsmudger 2
Is it safe enough to drive around?
michael5556 247
Not sure, it doesn't sound good so probably going to try and leave it unless necessary
michael5556 247
Now think it's driveshaft as it seems to get faster the faster I drive. Don't see what else it could be
tjsmudger 2
Could be a c.v joint, I had what sounds like this last year, was a pain in the rectum. When it was replaced the whole joint had snapped off! And there was me flooring it down the motorway only the day before! Makes you think!
michael5556 247
Yeah I am thinking it's a joint, but which one ? Lol hard to find out. Shall I just replace the drive shaft or take it apart and just do the joint? Luckily for me the engine is coming out next week anyway and going in the mk2 so could just do it then
tjsmudger 2
I watched my pal undo the wheel then loosen the wheel bearing and it literally fell off! That's where mine snapped.
tjsmudger 2
The driveshaft on mine was fine, just the cv joint
michael5556 247
I might just replace the whole thing incase it decides to break
