Getting my first VR6 tomorrow !!

Recommended Posts

Hi

I'm getting a golf VR6 tomorrow - its an L plate and has done 150K miles - on the test drive the car seemed to drive extremely well - my friend said that VW's go forever - should I worry about the high mileage ???

Also does the CAM chain ever need to be changed - I know they can get loose so can you just tighten them back up ??

Thanks very much for your help

an excited future VR6 driver !!

The cam chain should last the life of the engine its the tensioners that need replacing as they wear out around the 100k mark - check to see if yours have been done - i suspect at 150k they should have been! My old engine had done 155k and the only problem i had with it was excessive oil usage/burning - as long as the engine sounds ok and you have no nasty knocks or blue smoke you should be fine! I would advise using the VW synta silver oil when doing oil changes! I didn't on my old engine and i'm sure this contributed to the excessive engine wear!

Do a search on the forum about chains and tensioners and you'll get all the info you need!
