Engine strange rattle after oil change

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Today I did a couple of maintenance parts changes onto my Golf 3(96' 2.9 VR6 Synchro), plugs, oil cleaning the throttle body etc. I just bought the car and the previous owner told me he used Castrol 10W-60 (don't know the exact brand), which seems way to thick for me.

Anyway I bought Motul 5W-40 for the car and after changing it and starting the engine it sounded like a freakin Diesel :)) . There was a loud rattle, like a really worn out tappet sound and the mechanic told me he thought one of the pistons was not firing.

Fortunately while we were trying to figure out why would the engine do this and starting the car a few times the sound stopped and the engine came back to it's normal sound. A slight rattle could still be heard sometimes but this was also audible from before changing the oil, and no it's not a chain rattle i've listened to that audiofile in the FAQ section over and over again, it's a hit in my playlist :)) ).

So, was it possible that the tappets are really starting to show their age (the engine has 200K Km in it or 124000 miles) and they got used to the thick oil and after the lighter oil filled the pipes it couldn't create that protective layer of lubrication right away ?

The mechanic also checked the leads and once the engine heated up some of them weren't so reliable.

Should I change back to a heavier oil ? Something like 10W-40 ?

Thanks
