I'm affraid you'll have to be a little more acurate on the description in order to help properly....

Without being to cheeky, does the car drive alright at low speeds, then when you accelerate it "Slips"?? Or does it balk a gear say from 1st to 3rd? have you tried manually selection gears to see if all are there?

have you checked the fluid at all?? Is it brown and burnt almond type smelling or is it nice and pink?

you see what I mean about being a little more accurate, all of the above symptoms help us gain a better picture of how to advise... also your locality would be helpful obviously you don't want to drive it too much or to far until the problem is cured hence more info.

Saaawwwwwwwyyyyy to be such a kill joy, I'm only trying to help if possible :(:) !alien ;)

My car was born an auto but looks to have been converted to manual at some time, probably when the auto box packed in.

A manual conversion (if suitable) could be the way to go if your box turns out to be knackered

i no this seems a silly question but does the autobox come wid a dipstick? if so where is it located, ive checked all the engine bay and even under the car but aint got a clue how to check the level or top it up. the prob with the car is wen i pull off and put my foot down around 2000 to 3000 revs the car starts jurking and seems to slip a gear but seems ok at higher speeds. is there any diagnostic macheines that can locate the problem, btw im located in london, cheers again,

shani :?

It would appear that you have one of these "Lifetime" boxes i.e the oil is not to be changed and is a sealed unit (Yeah!! Right!!!) There are places in and around London that can help you .. places such as C&R Enterprises (ask for my mate Steve Creswell!) BRMotorsport ( Brian Ricketts) etc. It may be worth taking the car into the Stealers for a Diagnosis ONLY as I'm not sure, but you may have a "Learning" Autobox i.e one that's addaptive to your driving style. There was also a modification to the box wherby a new magnet was fitted to "Trap" the debris from the clutches this also had something to do with the "Slipping" Effect.. That's all I can suggest at present until I know a bit more..

P.S there was an Autobox advertised recently on EBAY, went for 100 quid, may be worth looking there, failing that there was a chappie in Brighton called Terry that would send over to Germany for a genuine part on the cheap!! or look for a guy called Jeremy Lear in and around Diss, he may also be able to help, used to have genuine new boxes for 400 quid!!!

Good Luck!!

Yep i have an auto aswell, been getting the same problem as you mate. If you look under the car, behind the radiator, you will notice a red dipstick towards the right hand side. This is the dipstick for the ATF. Unfortunatley, i have no clue what so ever how to take it out, but it does come out. There's also a Filter for the ATF within the tranmission. Both fluid and the filter needs to be changed at the same time. This is the first task to carry out and hopefully your gear slippage problems will go away. If they dont, then it just gets a bit too technical for me! Try your local "automatic transmission specialist". Im sure theres a few about.

P.S. There is one guy on this website who actually went a bit crazy, and took apart his automatic transmission because he wanted to get it chrome plated. I havent chatted to him for a while now, but said there is a draining nut on the autos near the dipstick, and the new ATF needs to be fed in through a pressuried container, it wont go in normally. Hope this helps

yeah, i aint gona bother pissing about. Im gona take it straight to an auto trans. specialist. IF you get the parts i.e. ATF fluid and flilter, they shouldnt really charge more than £100 while you wait. I know it sounds expensive, but theres always more work involved in renewing the fluig on an auto than a manual, hence mechanics charge more.

Hi Shani,

1/ Mackies is Based in Glasgow, on London Rd. Look up yell.com under Automatic Gearbox specialists, They should be able to sell you the parts for a rebuild.

2/ The clutch plates should come in a repair pack and be available for your local guy to fit . I'm Told that it's relatively easy for the competent Mechanic to install BUT NOT FOR THE DIY'ER So don't try this at home boys n'gals!!

Failing that, Look around Diss for a chap working on his own called Jeremy Lear, He used to beable to put his hands on Autos reeeeeaaaall Easy and for the pricely sum of £400 notes!!!

Good Luck!!
