New to VR6 - What Should I Look Out For?

Recommended Posts

One of the rears has a little bobble but no more than that. Its not metallic black so will get a smart repair on it or take it to my mats shop to get done.

It had the chains done 15k ago @ 115k. It has come with a pile of receipts etc - belonged to a VW tech before the guy I bought it off.

Thanks for the reply bud

The main advice i would give is to keep on top of servicing. I do a full one once a year before summer and a simple oil and filter change before winter, it never goes more than 5k without a service.

Rust is a bugger, but any early signs get sorted sooner rather than later as once its started it will only get worse.

You can always have a read through the buyers guide i did. Its got some good things to have a look for but they are usually great, reliable cars when looked after.

Yer rust on front floor pans, where people jack em up on the sills they go miss shapped and squashed, then the rust sets in..

Both my golfs and my vento all have welded front floor pans for the same reason, incorrect jacking...

And timing chains, they wear out for a past time, you may wanna double check they have been done, not just said they where done, its not a to pleasent job...

And as the other chap mentioned, oil change at least every 5k, keep your chains and guides tidy...

Oil residue around the rocker cover gasket isnt a big issue, they tend to leak a bit and arent difficult to replace, but the headgasket mating point should be clean and tidy. Watch out if it looks like its all been freshly cleaned though cos he could be hiding a problem. A dirty dry engine ( and i dont mean caked in sh!te, you know what i mean) is what you want to look for when checking for leaks, a shiny clean engine could prompt further enquiry

check the abs works and the abs light functions as normal, an R reg would use a teves 20 pump which is much better than the early ones and is about £500 just for the pump.
