Help, i think my 2.8 V6 4motion is f*cked.

Recommended Posts

Hello!

Ive got a Y reg (2001) 2.8 v6 4motion with 93k miles on it. Xmas day is started making a tinking noise. By tinking i mean a high pitched tapping noise, like someone tapping a fork on a champagne glass, sort of, thats the closest i can think of to explain it. That kind of pitch but its a metallic noise and from inside engine. It was doing it every second or so maybe less. Its only intermittent, so doesnt do it all the time. After this it started misfiring and lost loads of power. No warning lights have come on when it 'tinks' or when it misfires. Garage dont know what it is. They put new leads/plugs in it but no joy. Sometimes it misfires without the tinking noise. Has been suggested that it may be a timing chain problem but then surely it would be doing it all the time, not randomly when it fancies it. Also been suggested it may be coil pack problems but this doesnt explain the tinking noise. Has any one with a 4mo had a similar problem? Help me please as im currently looking at selling it spares/repair at a loss of £2000 over 6 months.

The garage have spoken to White Rose VW dealer in Petersfield, Hampshire, who said quite a common prob is valve guide on the head working them selves loose, which would explain noise and misfire. Is it common? Have you had it on your 4mo?

If it is a valve guide its going to be min £1000, not good. Can you help me?!?!?!?

I love my 4mo and dont wanna sell it but gonna have to unless you lot can help!

Have you vag com'd it at all?

Have you narrowed down where the noise is coming from? You can use a long screwdriver with the handle to your ear and place the tip at varous points on the engine to narrow down where the noise is coming from.

What were you doing before it started making the noise, did it just start after normal driving or after a bit of a beasting. Head removal with new gaskets is only about £250 in parts at most if you do it yourself. I can't see where £750 of labour comes into it.

Bungy...im far from a mechanic so wouldnt know where to start removing a head gasket. I havent vag com'd it, not sure if garage have, they did diagnostic check on it, it just came up with a misfire code, not sure if it was a vag com scan though. As i said i know sweet fa about cars. Starting to wish i did though. The garage have quoted me £200 to remove head and have a look. The other cost comes from either stripping the head down, finding the problem and fixing it, or sending it to an enginering firm to do it. This is if it is a valve guide coming loose, if not then fuck knows whats its gonna cost, depends on what it is i suppose. That £1000 is a rough guide, and the mechanic is a mate so trust him. Hes done work for me for years, think his estimate is a bit high rather than be a bit low and then give me a higher bill.

It was a bit of a cobweb blowing exercise, well it was xmas day evening, so road was dead. Rinsed it a bit then was on 30mph roads for aboout 5 mins before the noise started. Whole journey was 5 mins on 30mph roads, 70mph for 5 mins, 30mph for 20 mins, well over 70mph for 5 mins, then 30mph for 5 mins then it started making the noise. It wasnt what id call a proper ragging, more of a medium unleashing!

B road blaster...just replied to your comment on 'other' site, cheers buddy.

Richie Rich37...cheers buddy, im trying!
