Welcome to my World. I had some nasty ABS problems on my VR6. Contrary to popular opinion, a lit ABS light is not always "just a dirty wheel sensor".

The first thing I'd recommend is doing a VAG-COM diagnostic (or getting one done). If it reports something simple like a wheel sensor or the brake pedal position sensor, buy the required parts new and fit them yourself.

If it's something else, try renewing your brake fluid, completely bleeding the system in the process. Make sure that everything is done up tight afterwards. If the light comes back on after this, check the fault codes again.

If you continue to get a pump or inlet/outlet valve fault code, do the following:

- use VAG-COM to clear the fault codes from the system. Does the light still come straight back on? If not, then it's just an intermittant fault - rush your car down for an MOT before the light comes back on!

- If the light comes straight back on, you will need to replace the ABS pump/valve assembly (as a unit). A second-hand ABS pump assembly will work as long as the part number (this is on a sticker on the top of the cylindrical pump) is identical to that of your car's ABS pump. In order for this to be the case, it has to be from a VR6 of approximately the same age as yours. Expect to pay anything up to £100 for the pump and another £150-£200 for fitting.

- Obviously, finding an appropriate second-hand pump will take time. Probably longer than your current MOT will last. Pull out the ABS light / airbag lamp trim on the right-hand side of your dsah. Disconnect, then dismantle the trim/lamp assembly (carefully!) and you'll find there is a small circuit board inside with the two bulbs soldered onto it. Now all you have to do is poke the airbag bulb through the hole in the plastic trim for the ABS bulb. Secure the circuit board to the back of the trim with tape, then reconnect the wiring and push the rigged assembly back into the dash (carefully). Voila - an ABS light that will pass your MOT. The airbag light isn't checked on an MOT, so you're OK there.

Please note that the above is tried and tested on a 1994 model VR6 only.
