C2 chip. off the clock, how do you know when to stop 7300rpm??

Recommended Posts

just plugged in my C2 ecu n/a remap. I thought i wouldn't be able to tell much difference. just a few more bhp if i put it on a dyno and a higher redline.

its the best money ive spent on my car yet. totaly changed the way it drives and feels a fair bit faster. im totaly loving it.

My problem is ive got a rev limit of 7300. its well off my rev counter. I thought id try and hit it and left it going in 2nd gear to try and work out how long ive got before ive got to change gear in the futcher. sounded amassing. but it just never hit the rev limit carryed on pulling nicly. pehaps i pussyed out to soon. it ended up sounding so good but mental that i had to stop. eather way i want to use all them all

so how do I know where i am? And im assuming that a healthy N/A VR6 it quite happy to rev upto 7300?

cheers for any adive.. im not keen on having max power rev count stuck on the dash btw

Tom

The rev counter isn't very accurate at all, especially at lower rpms.

Log it with VAG-COM if you have it? Fire up a couple of Measuring blocks, including rpm, set it to write to a log and then go for a blat. When you get back, download the log and open it MS Excel. VAG-COM records the actual rpm from the crank sensor.

The rev needle takes a signal from the ECU which then has to be driven mechanically, so there's an element of error involved.

I personally wouldn't make a habit of revving to 7300rpm on a standard VR6. It's not making torque up there, so there's no point. With HD springs and cams, knock yourself out :-)

why don't you try the digital rev counter.

make sure your mileage is displayed not trip computer in left screen.

turn ignition onto 2

press and hold trip reset button for left screen.

turn ignition right off with button still pressed in and then start the car with button still pressed.

when running release button and press it until number 4 comes up.

see how you get on!

i've only ever hit the rev limiter on my standardish vr once and thats only coz i wasnt paying attention :)

join in at the next rr day and install a shift light using the graph as a guide to set it. no point just hitting the rev limiter coz as it passes peak power , which is about 800rpm below your current limiter it starts to tail off and you'll lose time/speed. admittedly the sound of a vr at the red line is awesome but it's not good for the engine.
