288 mm Setup, braking seems worse than my rustbucket diesel Mondeo!! HELP!

Recommended Posts

My 92 vr has been converted to 288mm but the braking seems extremely poor for a performance car, ive never driven any other vr6 so have nothing to compare to but I would say the brakes are no better than my heap of a mondeo of the same age. Bearing in mind the golfs brakes are bigger and it has discs all round I assume I have a problem? I have changed discs pads and fluid all round with no improvement at all, the pedal doesnt go to the floor so probly not master cylinder. Could it be the rear compensating valve? and if so is there any way of checking? Maybe im just being fussy but the vr's brakes are nowhere near as good as any other car ive had with discs all round has anyone else noticed this?

since you put the 288 calipers on have you had the car on vagcom to purge the abs? every time ive opened up the system ive had to purge the abs pump then bleed all round again to get the power back into them, they felt like a plank of wood. Now they feel like they could pull the car on its nose its certainly not lacking in braking force.

The rear compensating valve would make the rears brake harder the further down the back went, to compensate for more weight, it would only affect the rears though, usually it would make the rears brake harder so youd have a back end overtaking the front, the fronts do most of the braking in any situation.

Seeing as you now have 288s if you still werent happy with the power you could put a set of 312 carriers and discs on too, thats another option

Lukey B thanks for the reply mate, I didnt upgrade the brakes they where allready done but it seems everything about this car has been bodged and since ive replaced the discs and pads I never purged the abs pump so i'm 99% sure youve cracked it for me mate. The gearbox blew up the other day so will be a couple weeks before I can try but my mate has the latest Snap on diagnostics machine and it does comunicate with my golf so hopefully it will have the option to purge the pump and i can get this sorted. Thanks again mate

not that i know of, but if the servo has no vacuum it will have a huge decrease in power, also have a good look at the servo for any leaks or problems i imaging its something to do with that, and the vr6 brake are pretty good, they should stop the car with ease.

also have you got abs?

No egg sucking meant here...

if you have just fitted them did you wipe the oil off the discs before fitting the pads? Did you take it easy on the pads to allow them to bed in??

I ask as you may have contaminated pads or glazed them if you didnt give'em a chance to bed in..

Ive had a look and the pipes on and doesnt seem to be cracked, as far as I can tell the servos fine aswell. The pedal does push up a little bit when you first press it as if its resting when the engines off?? Rcf yeah discs and pads where done properly mate only thing that wasnt done was the abs purge but it turns out I cant do that without vag.com, have only got snap on diagnostics and they dont have that option. Gearbox is being replaced next weekend so i'l give it a nice long run and see if they improve, has only been 30 miles since they have been replaced so they arent bedded yet. I just dont see that making the pedal feel better but we will see, thanks for your comments guys.

you could try the old put a brick on the brake pedal and leave it for a few days to see if any bubbles disperse trick. or go to a gravel area and slam the brakes on a few times so abs kicks in, this will cycle the abs valves, but is far less of an exact method
