suspension knock and squeek? now failed m.o.t

Recommended Posts

another new thread from me. got an impending m.o.t and surprise suprise the gremlins are out to get me. ive got a strange rubbery squeek coming from under the fromt of the car. cant tell what side. seems to get a little louder when manouverring. you can only hear it a very low speeds, like pulling away and parking. this is accompanied by a knock on the passenger side. im guessing top mounts but it really is loud and i can hear it when im driving and with the stereo on! ive been under the car and tugged and pulled as much as i can but nothing will budge and nothing looks excessively worn. i did think it was the heatshields but replaced all the star washer fixings last week as some were rusty but ive still got smoething loose under there.

only surfaced in the last few days but its doing my head in already. any suggestions before i start walking everywhere?

cheers

Top mounts / bearings' date=' ball joints, ARB and wishbone bushes could all be culprits or faulty in isolation. Is your car lowered?

[/quote']

oh yea, its lowered. top mounts dont bother me as i already bought some for my last vr. just never got round to putting them on. did think about wishbone bushes but they didnt look too bad under the car. it almost feels like a slight lateral movement when you turn. the loose clunking wories me though. bushes and mounts i can deal with, just worried something is going to fall off the car and two days before an m.o.t!

Needs 2 of you really to check. One to move things about ( a pry bar is good for this) and one to watch. Could also just let the mot examiner do his job and spot what is at fault.

was thinking that. just a little short of time and £££ if it fails. will get under it again when it stops raining for a quick check again.

any rollbar and w/bone bush recommendations? should any need changing

M.O.T Failed!!! spent last night hunting for earth wires and getting the indicators to work and that turned out to be the least of my problems

n/s front shock dead

n/s front tyre slashed on inner exposing chords

centre of exhaust not supported properly

failed emmissions test - "massively" according to the tester

gutted

nothing on that list that i expected either. thought it was going to be suspension that was the issue. little surprised at the coilovers failing. now where did i put that magic lamp?!

Doesn't sound too bad. Exhaust support could just be a rubber and an easy fix, emissions? are you running a cat and if so and it's lunched just "borrow" another. N/S shock and tyre sounds like you've either hit something or its been gone a while in which case just necessary to get sorted. Good luck with getting it through its ticket. I did ask before, where are you based as your sig just says Hampshire?

village called Medstead, nr Alton. yea its not bad but im running coilovers and havent got time to send them away to be serviced. can you buy 1 coilover? or a pair? thought they only came a a full set.

the cat actually has a hole in it which maybe contributing to the shit emissions. ive posted it up here before, here: http://www.vr6oc.com/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?374737.post

am going to try tapping the hole and sticking a bolt in there as it blows and does sound pretty rubbish. might be confusing the lambdaas well. going to clean the airflow sensor too as its just starting hesitating at low revs. might help lower the emissions. had the fault codes read and ive got a 00533 which is idle air control regulation. strangley no 02 sensor which both me and the tester reckoned it could be. only other code was a 00668 - battery power voltage supply (terminal 30) any ideas on that one????

gutted about the tyre as ive not long had the porka rims but the exhaust hangers may be a problem. will get a pic up later to show what i mean but its a milltek cat back and it doesnt seem to be a great fit for the car.

thanks for the advice and offers guys.

paul. the hole on the cat might not need welding after all. i got under it this aft (in the rain!) and there was the leftovers of a nut or something. the part with the hole is threaded on the outside so id need a blanking plug with a female thread. which is even easier. i managed to wind the remains off with mole grips.

you can just see the thread inside. the rest has obviously rusted and snapped off.

as for the shocks i may just bite the bullet and get a new set. awesome gti have got a few offers on and the weitecs sound like a good deal for the money. will just stick my a3 alloys back on for the m.o.t while i look at this tyre. cant afford to pay out for another pair right now.

good news though. the maf sensor was a little dirty so i gave it a clean and it no more hesitatin. goes like a rocket. £65 saved already, hopefully thats was a large part of the emissions sorted.

any ideas where id get a blanking nut from? plumbers?

ordering new coilies tomorrow morning. everything is sounding really loose on the car. as ive already got a set of compbrake front top mounts to fit is there anything else i need? particularly for the rear as its really noisy. be handy to get it all ordered up so i can do it all at the same time.

cheers

that would be seriously helpful mate. thanks. will get me through an m.o.t as nobody seems to stock any coilover sets. which means im waiting well into next week for delivery. if i can get a set before the weekend i get a free re-test. cheap i know but when your running out of pennies £50 just to tell me a coilover is ok is a little wasteful.

out of interest what make is it? how much did you want to send it?

any info on the rear top mounting would be helpful. 2 vw garages have no idea. there are a number of parts on there diagram. bolts, washers, cups etc. but no kit. is anything going to be worth replacing as i havent got the time to take the car apart, check, order put it back together then take it all off again.

It's a jamex one I think. Chrome strut' date=' red springs and blue anodised adjuster. I'll see how much it costs to send in the morning and let you know.

cheers for that. I actually got hold of a set of coilovers from tweeks as they called the factory in germany and promised me a direct delivery late thursday/friday. if you let me know how much you want for the single one i'll check the bank. gotta be careful as i still need a shit load of stuff before pay day. may still have it just in case the others dont arrive or i dont have time to get the whole set on before a re test
