cliveyp 0
I've been after a change of career for a while now due to being frustrated in the job i'm in. For those that don't know, i'm currently a Project Engineer (or Design Engineer more than anything) for a manufacturing company that produces metal melting furnaces. Just for a bit of history for you guys, i went into an apprenticeship with another company that manufactured rolling roads and engine test beds for automotive and aero industries. I specialised in design there, and spent the final 18 months of the scheme, plus an extra 6 months afterwards, in their drawing office. I then moved from there for much better pay into the drawing office of the place where i currently am. I think it may be the lack on interest of th eend product here, but i really don't have the enthusiasm that the job needs, and have been wanting a change. I have had many thoughts, such as how to get in to an IT support role etc, but i have now kinda settled on an idea that i just need to put into practice...................motorsport!I want to see if it's possible top get into that field using the engineering experience that i have. I just need some pointers of how to start. I've thought of emailing the likes of Prodrive, along with Benetton and Williams to see if there's anything with them that may be of use. To be honest, i'm almost willing to do anything to get in there, but i can't take a pay drop. Don't get me wrong, i'm not on a large sum of money as it is, but i can't afford to drop at all. I just kinda need any advice people can offer, and any experience people have had (such as ideas from Hannah etc)Cheers guys.
badboyV6 4
Im currently a Systems Admin for an IT firm in Gloucester. Its really hard to get your foot in the door m8. If youre confident of you skills you would probably get a desktop support role anything from 14-17k Once you get a bit of experience and maybe get yourself a HNC in the nights like i did... Dont believe what the adverts telll you: just getting an MCSE or equivelent will not get you a good job in IT. Weve got 3 MCSE qualified people here with no experience and they couldnt tell their arse from their elbow They are currently logging calls and passing them to second line (as its shift the 1st line are on max 16k, 2nd max 21k and sys admins (im not saying ) Probably better trying to find a job with a small company where you get lots of hands on experience- you'll learn much quicker. Ive been doing this for 5 years now and its finally starting to pay. A friend of mine did his Computer science degree and has been working for BT for about 2-3 years- just got a payrise to 70k last week- (and this is in Cardiff) b'stard!! badboyV6 4
Also get your cv sorted and send it to all recruitment agencies, check out www.cwjos.co.uk and www.totaljobs.co.uk. There maybe a 1st line job here soon; the pay aint bad but its a rapidly growing company with good prospects for promotion....

nickbee 1
After I completed my degree (Manufactuing Systems Engineering) I gave up on the engineering industry completely as it was nigh-on impossible to get any sort of a decent-sounding job. So, I'm really not the person to ask. However, it's almost impossible to change career completely without taking a pay-cut, I'm facing exactly the same problem myself.Incidentally, finance didn't prove to be so hot either, but that's a different story. acf8181 0
the propblem with motorsport is theres lots of people wanting jobs in that field, and thus a lot of them are very highly qualified with motorsport related qualfications.first things first, call every single motorsport company in your area. you never know if you don't ask. i can point you to a few if you tell me where you are, but as you're looking at renault and prodrive i'm guessing you're in oxfordshire. try williams (near renault), theres also loads in brackley/silverstone such as BAR. you're most likely gonna have to start at a lower category team though.if you have no luck that way you could always do a college motorsport evening course whilst staying at your curreny job.or another thing to do could be offereing your services for free to a formula 3 team at weekends just to get your foot in the door. by doing this you'll meet a lot of people and if you impress will be able to jump into a good paid job. badboyV6 4
I know they do an automotive engineering degree in Bolton (as i started to do it when i was young) Also do project work with Formula Fords etc... They also do a smilar course in Swansea where they use Pembrey as a test for project cars.... Its a 3-5 year course though- Foundation year, + 3 years BSc Hons and a sandwich year working - the placements are hard to come by though......
jonvr6highline 0
Incidentally' date=' finance didn't prove to be so hot either, but that's a different story.[/quote']Hi Nick,Don't I recall that you're in Management Accounts/ Management Accountant.I'm in the same field. Just on course to finishing level 4 of AAT, just awaiting for results for final exams (Management Accounts) from December exams. Passed Financial Accounts & Personal Taxation last Summer.Have you done any courses?Yeah, you right it is hard to get out if you wanted to, as you know what you know and after a few years in it, well that is what you know! (I think that makes sense ).CheersJon 8) [ Edited Mon Jan 17 2005, 01:29PM ]
