hamishsmum 0
hiyagot a P reg VR6. about a month ago it wouldn't start, got my neighbour to give me a jump start went for a long drive and all appeared ok.yesterday morning it sort of lumbered into a start but i heard a clicking sound as i was turning ignition, did the shopping and stuff and started fine. been out this morning and it clicked and died. a few wannabe mechanics have told me it's the alternator. any ideas should i try a new battery first or just give it to an auto spark? i know it's a bit of a needle in a haystack, but knowledge of cars is limited and i hate dealing with garages for this reason as i'm frightened of being ripped off! thegoth 5
when you try to start it and it clicks does the clock fade and reset to 00:00? Which would indicate a lack of current either from the battery being flat or breaking down.If you have a multimeter you can check the alternator by measuring the voltage across the battery with the car running, should be over 13.5V. Remeasure with all the lights / fans and electrics on.
