word of warning (in a nice way)

Recommended Posts

hi all

please be carefull driving around now that the snow has gone coz as i found out yesterday just one bad pot hole can almost end it all.

I went over a foot deep pot hole outside waitrose in Hitchin on friday last week and my steering felt a bit dodgy afterwards so i took the car to a mechanic friend who took it out for a spin and came back to me and said that i feels like i've knocked the tracking out of line but i do need two front tyres,

So yesterday i took myself off to the tyre place and while the guy had the car up in the air i asked him if i could have a shake about to see if there was any play under there. what i found was shocking and i'm not happy with my mechanic friend :(

when i did the top to bottom movment on the wheel the wheel moved about half a foot in each direction, i turned to the guy and asked him if he'd undone the wheels already but he hadnt :S

It turned out that the shock of the pot hole had undone my two bolts holding the bottom of the strutt in place thus making the hub move in and out. very dangerous. especially when i think about that i've had my girlfreind and two children in the car with me going up and down the motorway :(

well now it is all done up and safe with two new tyres on the front, but please guys if you do hit a pot hole or a bump and your steering goes a bit weird please check it out coz i was lucky but one of you guys might be not and i dont want to see anything happening to anyone on here.

Cheers

john

also would just like to add to this if you notice any pot holes on your routes then please report them, i have reported 4 today, they will only get worse and if your car gets damaged and the pothole has been reported they have to pay out...

i got caught out by an unreported pothole last year and it cost me 500 that i didnt have... so its worth doing... dont get caught out!! it only takes 5 mins online on your local councils website.

na, with my council you just go to the highways on bit their site and there is a section for reporting potholes, you then enter the road name (get off google maps if unsure of exact name) then it says describe exact location so use landmarks to describe how they can find it... then it says decsribe the damage, so i usually put 'massive crater opened in the road in line of traffic needs attention'

that should be enough, then if you hit it when not concentrating in a few weeks and they havent sorted it they will have to pay... worth doing just in case they get worse...
