Right, last night i was driving home and hit an almighty pothole which I didnt see. The force was so strong that it caused my cd to skip for a few seconds, it was a really loud bang. Driving back home and everything seemed normal, but this morning the front right tyre is flat. Not pancake flat but getting there. Obviously im going to need a new tyre but the nasty sound of hitting that pothole has made me think that something else is damaged.

The suspension seems fine, are there any other little things that could've gone kaput because of this pothole?

The car should be able to cope with a very heavy hit from a pothole!! i hit one years ago and bent and cracked the rim but the rest is ok, thats the suspension doing its job really! it may have knocked the tracking out of alignment a little! the only other thing i can think of look under the bonet or in the car to see if the jolt may have disslodged anything!?

As said it should be strong enough to take the hit remember its a VW not a French car... check your rim and tyre for a leak/damage. Usually you can see an impact line accross the tyre if it was that good a hit. (Like a darker line across the tyre)...

Your eyes are a great tool here... So check the suspension mount points/joints etc etc..(give 'em a wiggle) if it was all dirty underneath you will see a clean spot as it will have flexed the crud off. so wipe it over with your wolly mits (lightly - don't want to scare your self when you wipe it all off if you see what i mean.. :D ) to see what is crud and what is new..

Under extreme and I do mean extreme (can't emphisise that word "extreme" enough... :D) cases your window may crack, the strut top may deform and a suspension arm may move..

If I do a really good one and it manages to impact the wheel then I always get a suspension re-alignment and that wheel rebalanced for my own peace of mind.. you should be able to feel vibrations and/or pulling anyway, just use your feel (the force Luke...)..

Finally.. if you want to take it that far - the local council responsible for the road has a well... responsibility.. You can get a form on line and make a claim for any damages.. you will need to take photos and measurements etc etc etc.. Just remember why your council tax goes up though if you do make a claim... :P
