ob2 conversion from 2.8 obd1 coilpack

Recommended Posts

you can probaby guess what this is all about - the car need turboing...

research has lead me to find obd2 set ups run a lot better once turbo-d

so ihave 2 choices:

1 - get a whole obd2 engine loom and ecu and drop that into the car after ive built it up

2 - convert my current 70k 2.8 obd1 coilpack to obd2 (which is avery strong well looked after engine

a few things to note about my build:

i will most likely be going down the low comp spacer gasket route and not forged lower internals

i plan on using a short runner so will not be using/require the standard inlet manifold

i also plan on using c2 4lb management

it will be based on a t3/t4 turbo which will realistically output 350+

i did consider stand alons/bigger turbos/forged bottom end but i want to keep the build cost efficient, im not saying its a tight budget but what i am saying is after a certain amount of poweri believe the chassis will be limiting the capability of the vehicle so i rather invest the money elsewhere. im not aiming to be the "fastest" etc i just want to have some fun in my car so i just want to build a streetable, reliable car and not really throw at it things that are unnecessary if there are alternative that will do the job reliably for less money)

the question is if i convert my car over to obd2 what is required:

im guessing:

ecu

transponder

loom

throttle body

and?

- i dont need the manifold as i plan to use a short runner

are there any guides to this? (im not being lazy ive honestly tried searching but not had much luck)

or does it make more sense to work off another obd2 engine and drop that in once its built up (but then again its hard to tell the condition of this engine (whereas my one i have known for around the last 10 years and it gets 2 oil changes in a year even though it only does about 4-5k a year and has never had any expense spared on it ).

im sure someone else would have had the same dilemma as me so some advice/experience woudl be helpfull

thanx in advance!!

For your proposed spec, all you need is the loom, ECU, throttle body and MAF.

C2 delete the immobiliser (if required) in the software, so you don't need the transponder, key or key reader.

The ECU will also need a 44 pin socket soldering onto the motherboard.

If the loom is going into another MK3, then it's plug and play. If you're putting the loom into any other car, then you'll need to sort out the duplicated wires and also the lengths. Some wires will need lengthening, some will need shortening.

Fuseboards are the same across all MK2s and MK3s, so the loom just plugs into your existing one for ease of installation.

your a legend kevhaywire lol

somehow i had this feeling that if someone ever decided to reply to this thread it would probably be either you or c2 them selves

thanx for the confirmation on the bits needed and the extra info on the c2 immobiliser defeat will defo help me track all the bits down!

your help is much appreciated

Thanks Kev

To Convert to OBD2 you need the things listed, plus the OBD2 lambda probe if yours is a early OBD1 setup.

As Kev says we can turn off the immobilizer in software if this is required. We can also do the immobilizer defeat as a standalone item aside from any software.

We can also supply you with the head spacer you need, I would recommend using the 8.5:1 spacer, as boost is adictive and you always want more. I'm sure everyone on here that has boost will agree.

Regards our immo defeat, there is no need for ANY of the immo equipment (ie, transponder box, wiring, key etc.) Just make sure the K-line from the diagnostic connector is wired direct to the ECU.

top stuff guys!

so thats the parts list sorted for this side of things:

obd2 ecu

obd2 throttle body

obd2 engine harness

new ob2 lambda probe

i can use my obd1 maf as it is the 6 pin version

short runner mani (so no need for the obd 2 one)

c2 turbo software with the immob defeat

and then the usuall stuff

i will defo be going to c2 for the software and maybe a few other other little bits too so i will be in touch soon

thanx again guys

  • 4 weeks later...

can anyone help me confirm this:

i have currently an obd1 coilpack car - 94 with these looms:

http://www.vagcat.com/epc/cat/vw/GO/1994/121/57/1281407/

http://www.vagcat.com/epc/cat/vw/GO/1994/121/57/1283617/

but an obd 2 car has:

http://www.vagcat.com/epc/cat/vw/GO/1997/184/57/2248955/

http://www.vagcat.com/epc/cat/vw/GO/1997/184/57/2250528/

only the last loom described as the harness for engine compartment

seems different to me, is that the only one i need?
