Buying car advice?

Recommended Posts

only got the green slip? that would suggest he's not received the logbook for the car as that would be the new owner slip? took 3 weeks for my corrado to come through..

makes me wonder if he's bought it, thought it was an egg, and selling it on ultra fast?

The guy should send the log book off and you get to keep the slip as proof of new owner, so yeah, it could be a problem :)

you should not have to be ringing the DVLA - its his responsibility, if you did it, then you'd probably have to pay for a new logbook, where as the previous owner says he never received it, it probably will be free...

something just doesnt smell right - as RCF has said, if he wants the sale, surely he should be prepaired to make a phone call and sort the paper work out?

Right ive just spoken to the DVLA and my mind is set i shall by the car with only the green slip this is because:

1) im only spending £700 on it, so if worst case scenario happens and its stolen/hpi oustanding ive only lost £700, if its a bad egg then i can make my money back by breaking

2) DVLA advsied i write up a small "contract" detailing the purchase, signed by myself, the seller, and a 3rd party who has overseen the sale (My mate) this basically covers my arse so if i get pulled by the police i wont get arrested / if its got finance outstanding i wont be liable

3) i can apply for the V5 free of charge witht he green slip so it wont cost me a penny

so all in all it is a risky punt, but not a major one, the DVLA guy said the car looked clean, he told me to qoute him what i know of it already and what i told him matched the records, happy days!

Is this the GTI 16v you're going to get? They're pretty rare to come by now so for 700.00 that's an unbelievable bargain.

I had a 16v GTI for about a week before I got the VR6 (completely changed my mind and had to have a VR ;) ) And I managed to sell it on for 1300.00 and it had 160,000 miles on the clock. So for 700 quid, Id be looking into things very, very carefully!

Aye i am looking carefully, he gave me the nymbers off his green slup and i checked against the dvla, they confirmed the purchase and said they sent him the V5 but could of been a clerical error, so to get the car for £700 i need to buy it next sunday, ehich doesnt give the guy time ti get a replacement V5, so ill just do it as its free anyway....
