MarkGolf 6
Help, I'm close to burning this thing!I just replaced the coilpack (AGAIN) and removed my Denso plugs and refitte the original NGKs' but still no luck..Basically, I start the car, it fires and it runs rough as! The idle is lumpy, it is overfueling and I get an odd popping noise, like an extreme pinking!Even after running the car for 5 mins, the plugs are sooty black which indicated the overfuelling not only to be confirmed by the smell of the exhaust fumes and the popping and flames.. I don't mind the flames.. The popping noise doesn't sound like metal on metal, the engine will run and at RANDOM times, the POP will sounds, the engine will shake, puff of oil vaopur from the breather and the revs will rise to stop it from stalling.. It occurs at random times and has NO consistancy to it, I've seen another guy has had this problem but no results posted..Also, the car just doesn't sound like a VR6The engine revs PERFECTLY.. The engine has been rebuilt if that helpsThe only thigns which haven't been replaced are the lambda, MAF, TPS and CPS..HELPPLEASEEEE
spindat45 0
Hi Mark. Anything showed up on vagcom? have you changed or swapped any of the temp sensors on the thermostat housing? I had other issues with mine when I changed the engine but was advised to check them but I was able to swap them all with spares to see. All were ok. Of the four things you haven't replaced I'd say Crank sensor or Lambda are most likely to cause the symptoms you've described imo although Lambda is not the easiest or cheapest to replace.Kevin
RAPgolfvr6182 2
check the maf sensor mine runs like this sumtimes and maf sesnor came up on vag com
MarkGolf 6
I haven't got VAG com so I've not been able to try that.. There could be an issue with that too, it's an OBD1 setup in an OBD2 ported car so Im not sure if it will still work..The temp sensors are all original, the black one is unplugged at the mo but i know this will have no affect on the running of the engine..Most of my parts did sit in the garage for 3-4 years which I guess took its toll.. Im sure its not the crank sensor as I dont think the car would fire if this was at fault! This fault finding is getting expensive, lolI will probably buy a new MAF for piece of mind though, might try unplugging the lambda while the car runs and see what happens....Seriously going to burn this thing soonVideo, i've since fitted the new coilpack so it doesn't have the misfire as heard in the vid anymorehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9g_2EBlAusU
RAPgolfvr6182 2
see if you could borrow a maf first n see if the problem goes away with the borrowed maf. if it does then its ur maf at fault
sparkz 0
Mark........Maf!!
UnitedMotorsport 55
I think youll find the MAF is at fault here. How does it run with the MAF unplugged?Unplugging the lambda sensor on an OBD1 setup will result in the ECU adding 25% extra fuel, So doing this wont highlight anything. rodney 17
yup MAF give it a clean.. they need cleaning every so often. so either the connector or the sensor needs a clean. I think there is a how to in the members section. someone will confirm that for me I am sure..
CALICO 130
mine ran a bit like that after putting the maf on the wrong way round there is an arrow showing flow direction on the side of it
MarkGolf 6
I ended up ordering a new one, my one had been sitting in a damp garage for years so Im sure that has killed it.. The new one turns up tomorrow so I've got my fingers crossed..It has been suggested that the intermediate shaft could be out but Im 99% sure it is correct and the car has been run for 20 mins and the cams and crank pulley line up perfect..Im just hoping this popping goes away, hopefully that is just excess fuel being burntWill report backMany thanks for the help and advice
MarkGolf 6
IT WORKED!!!No more popping and overfueling! The ONLY problem now is the engine is hunting, just found this vid on youtube, mines doing the same thing, just a little faster.. And it doesn't want to drive when clutch fully engaged... lol
kcw 1
Mine is doing something similar, popping and the engine seems its about to stall, gets worse with lights or fans on, didnt improve once turned off. Could my lambda be gubbed as the pipe off the pressure reg is blocked off not onto the inlet, caused it to overfuel?Ken
