I have buggered it up please help

Recommended Posts

I have a 1993 golf vr6, thats been laid up for nearly a year i have been starting it once a month to keep it going, the battery has been getting weaker and weaker, even with charging, so i buy a new battery, but dont fit it for a few month because im busy. So i put it on charge with it installed in the car, the next day i try and start it with the charger still connected BUGGER theres a puff of smoke from the front of the engine and now there nothing the ignition lights come on but there no nothing.

Feel free to mock i know it was stupid but now i need some help on whats happened any ideas?

no mocking here, it's not Edition 38. Sorry in joke.

could simply be the starter. the same happened to my daily some time ago - although obviosuly I hadn't got a battery charger connected ;-) - whiff of burning and then nothing. Have you tried bump starting it?

try tapping starter with hammer at same time as trying to start it ' date=' it may be just stuck

sounds familier! av to do this with mine lol the longer i leave it the harder it is to start.

if i get home from work at 6pm, leave the car till i leave for work in the morning at 7 i have a serious of events....

open car

get long jack handle and pop bonnet

hit (not to hard!) starter on top 4-5 times

get in car, turn ignition

wait upto 10 seconds with key turned....

theeennnnn......

it fires up normal!!!

worse the longer i leave it, better the lesser time, 8 hours at work and when i leave i dnt even need to tap starter!

will get round to doing it one day...

hopefully urs doing same

Plan a)

Do you have a volt/amp meter???

Simply disconect the battery and check the voltage accross the battery. Is the battery swollen at all? You are looking to see 12volts or more across it.

Plan B)

Switch the head lights on. Do they come on??? Yes then you still have some charge in the battery... Have a friend turn ignition key. Do the lights remain strong or dip. If the dipping does happen then to off or not...??? If the lights dim then this shows in-sufficient charge to drive anything... try recharging and repeat test - if the same happens battery shot. If it takes charge and works yay..

If the lights remain on and strong then check all fuses...

After this you really need a multi-meter.

If you are a memeber of the AA/RAC homestart. Could always be worth a call....

good luck
