Hey guys I just took my 97 VR6 to a garage near my house for some repairs. The inital problems were as follows:-

-Water Bypass pipe was leaking (which actually blew over the weekend)

-Oil leak in the Oil Cooler

Now after taking the car in today and they have looked at these problems...it's come back at around $1000NZD to do these repairs. That would also include servicing the radiator, flushing the cooling system and de gasing and re gasing the air con so that the radiator can be serviced.

Shortly after I spoke to the garage about these problems they phoned me again to tell me that my head gasket has blown. The guy has said at this stage the minimum I will be looking at for repairs is around $2000-$3000NZD however it could well be higher, Apparently the job would involve taking off the timing chains or atleast loosen them to get the head gasket out.

The guy said that either my head gasket blew during the weekend as a result of my bypass pipe blowing...or it could of actually blown before I bought the car, which may be why my cooling system was so muddy and dirty?

Can anyone on here advise about head gaskets and prices?

Would be much appreciated =)

Hey, nice to chat to someone from new zealand (my family live out there).

Head gasket change is a bit of a job to do, your head could possibly need a skim, which would require you head to be stripped, yes timing chains will need removing off of cam sprockets to get the head off. The price for a head gasket set over here was about £70 when i bought mine.

Your water by-pass pipe (crack pipe) is the main feed from your water pump to thermostat housing, so if that 'blew' then your engine wouldn't stand much chance of cooling itself!

Good luck mate!

It would seem strange for the garage to know the headgasket has gone if he has the other problems which would give you the same sort of signs i would be inclined to have a compression test done. although this wouldnt show if the gasket has gone between oil and water.

True, but if the gasket has gone between oil and water you would see that in the oil going milky. You can do a combustion test to see if the combustion chamber has coolant leaking in. Go with calico, get them to test it, could save you a few beers!!

he has already stated he has a leak inside the oil cooler therefore the water and oil is probably already mixed giving symptoms of headgasket anyway you could have a sniff test done to see if there is fumes in the water i would personally get them to change cooler and crack pipe and flush then see if it overheats just disconnect the aircon until the problem is solved then get them to regas it

morning Paul

Cheers for the replies!

The thing is that my VR6 is already in the garage and has been taken apart so I can't really do too much now.

They have already said they will de gas the air con and fix the crack pipe and oil cooler.

Is there any ways that they can tell the headgasket has blown before taking it all apart and looking at it properly? I think I remember him saying he did some tests and that confirmed that it has gone. Something them smelling something funny. But I was too pissed off to take full notice of what he said over the phone lol
