PremiumVeeDub 0
This is a work in progress, a restoration if you will - the VRs been in the car since 2005.I have no docs relating to the build (grr) but there is a dyno sheet below before the 'charger went on - the engine is very highly tuned, definitely cams etc etc etc but without stripping the whole lot (tempted) no way to be sure... 177whp plus a ZR-1 = ???Raceland manifold, powerflow exhaust (4 boxes?!), shitty cone air filter, Eibach ARBs, coilovers (hot tuning maybe?) wide track front with 288mm drilled discs.Supercharger (ZR-1?) fitted around 2 years ago currently running 0.5bar (7.25psi) and delivering god knows what. There's a load of annoying engine things I'm the process of sorting out (relocate MAF and replace air filter, replace aux belt and idler pulleys) and it badly needs a remap - was told when sold that it had a "Garett" map but does this mean GIAC? Red Dot in Watford had a quick look at the software and declared it very crude. Should I go C2 FI chip or Vince at Stealth? Or something else?I bought a replacement gearbox (it was cheap and low milage, you can never have too many spares!), seriously considering fitting a Peloquin.Once I've got it running right, clay barred and polished it I'll update this, along with any build pics I end up with.Fitting Audi pepperpot alloys shortly, I reckon. Braided hoses, get rid of a couple of boxes in the 'zorst, and on and on it goes 8-)
craggsy 91
Needs back wheels spacing out at back a bit, but looks good mate
PremiumVeeDub 0
Add that to the list, yeah Front is not only wide track but has 15mm spacers on to clear the calipers...Looks worse in those pics than IRL due to the shadows though.
craggsy 91
Need to wrap the SS exhaust mani really, unless its a ceramic coated one.Sorry seems like im picking it to bits....i'm not tho just pointing out things that i think would be better
PremiumVeeDub 0
Go for it, that's why I'm here Someone else told me this, but I was concerned about heat dissipation - I'll be adding a few degrees C to the block, no?
craggsy 91
You wrap it to help keep heat in to help exhaust gasses escape quicker is how i understand it
krave 0
Hey mate, where in herts are you, i now have a mk2 vr, (really messy sleaper lol) and would like to meet people local.

PremiumVeeDub 0
It'd have the proper grill on if the welded-in VR6 rad bracket wasn't in the way
PremiumVeeDub 0
Forgot to ask - which oil should I use in the charger, and how often should I change it? Someone told me 'high speed bearing oil', someone else has told me "motor oil", and yet someone else said Synta Gold...
mike 6
sure thats teh power before the charger went on? good luck with gettin it sorted mate, looks nice
PremiumVeeDub 0
sure thats teh power before the charger went on? No But it's fast enough, whatever it's putting down. Rolling road is on the list tho....
Ben Seabrook 4
car looks very nice mate - did you buy the charger brand new ?
PremiumVeeDub 0
Came with the car - I didn't build, I'm just rebuilding Got a receipt for it 2nd hand, £1400 which seems very reasonable. I'm renewing as many parts as I can via RUF Kompressoren.
Ben Seabrook 4
yeah that's who I have been dealing with and doing pretty much the same thing !! do you have a ZR1 or 2 charger ?
PremiumVeeDub 0
Not sure: ZR-1 I think;EDIT: It's claner than that now. Much much cleaner. That was the day I bought it
boostjunkie 0
ultimatly I would be looking for a new ecu and one that does away with the maf, I'm running a hks fcon pro v gold on the skyline and it has a 4 bar map sensor now instead of the maf, this will also allow you to choose large injectors if you want them, such as the ford bosch top feeds as these go to large flow rates relatively cheaply, Stand alone does not have to be mega expensive likethe HKS, on my fiesta zvh turbo I ran Megasquirt and that as a 3.5-4 bar map sensor built in and now has a large following in the states so maps can be downloaded right of the site and tweeked by laptop deffo worth a look as it's a good system and can be tuned by many people now it will easily give you the adjustment requirements you need now and in the futurecheersMatt
rodney 17
Well,I would partially agree there bud . You will always run better with a air flow monitor of some kind as this allows the engine management to run much more accurately. The standard ECU is very capable and remaps are very good which allow you to keep a large amount of other systems standard functions. Keeps the OEM feel.TBH unless you are looking to up the power then the 4" is of no real benefit at this time. You will also get better results with a cold air path so as to avoid the heat soak caused in the engine bay as it is currently in the pictures... (cold air allows for better ignition). The heat wrap on the manni, accelerates the gasses away from the block and so aids in its breathing. Also reduces heat with in the engine bay and removes any hot weather detonation possibilities or heat soak in other areas. One final thing if you join up as a premium member you will gain access to discussions on MAF vs MAF-less operations etc as well as how to guides...good luck and keep us informed with your progression
boostjunkie 0
i have got rid of the maf on the skyline and tbh it runs far cleaner and gives a better responce, I'm also running two wide band lambda's, tbh it's really what make the easiest mapping and the most stable at higher boost levels, I have had two vw's so far inc the vr6, the passat tdi required a two new maf units within 2 years, what other functions would be lost, I suppose knock sensing would be the only one?cheersMatt
