Crank shaft Bearings knackered

Recommended Posts

I've just had my Girlfriends (Sally) V6 4motion in a local 'VW' dealership following a slightly more that ticking sound emanating from the bottom end - I would describe it as a light knocking.

Their final diagnosis after replacing the intake manifold gasket.... The big end on No.1 cylinder's damaged and scored crankshaft.A bit of history......

Sally bought the car with 40,000 miles on the clock - it sounded sweet and went like stink - little service history though and the price reflected it so we bought it.

Four months later it sounded like the exhaust was blowing - not a major concern until it sounded worse - like a worn pulley bearing - it still ran very well.

After closer examination we decided it was more serious and the light knocking was coming from the bottom of the engine - we decided to put it into the local VW dealer to see if we were in fact right. Two weeks later the garage eventually got round to removing the sump... and gave their diagnosis. 'we think you need a new engine - we are worried about the damage the broken bearing would have done to the rest of the engine'

What ever happened to repair? :-|

Un-convinced by the dealers professionalism and knowledge I’m keen to get some unbiased opinions from you guys (and girls) Can anyone tell me if I can (or a specialist) fit a new crank and bearings to the con rods, the likely cost? Thanks Richard
