low pressure turbo system

Recommended Posts

just been thinking , if i use a turbo at low pressure would i need spacer gasket as the supercahrged boys dont seem to use one until they get to about 10 psi. aiming to possibly use a diesel turbo so as to get boost from about 2000 rpm and not 3-4000 rpm like most people get. just wanting to get some help with the setup to use as torque is more important than horsepower.

There are a lot of treads in this forum regarding turboconverting. Look in the members rides and projects and garage engine tuning section and you could learn just abut everything there is to know ;).

To answer your questions:

If u want no or little lag you should use a small turbo, but you would have to use the right one. A garrett gt3071r would give u what u want. But buy the wrong one and it wont have the muscles to give u boost in the high revs.

Your setup depends on how much u want to spend. Look around and make your own kit.

If u want my recomandation I would go for a

Kinetic turbokit, with the C2 software. Then u can change turbo, cams etc as u like and the chip will "adapt".

Good luck, and remember: turboing your car WILL make you want more ;).

Agreed.

I think the gt3071r will start boosting at 2000ish and have full boost before 3000. cant remember but think thats what been said on the forum. . . . .

Some people like to have a little lag, or the car might get "too aggressive". if that makes any sense ;).

Correct :-)

Also true :-)

The way I see it, you get on average a 3 to 3500 rpm range with turbos (twin and compound turbocharging ignored for now). You can have that window of oppurtunity from 2500, but falls off past 5500, or you can have it kick in at 3500 and last until 7K.

I know which I prefer.

Having had the 3071 on mine, it was a pain in the arse, mainly because it's FWD and a turbo that spools that quickly not only potentially wrecks gearboxes, it also just spins the front wheels pretty much all the time in the wet....and yes, that's with an LSD and good tyres.

You pays your money and takes your choices ;-)
