Some kind of drainage

Recommended Posts

Hi there, this is my first ever post on here, this forum has proven to be really helpful so far with other problems i've come across but need help with this one........

I have a 93 VR6 with V9F supercharger!

This started a few weeks ago, the car won't start (won't even turn over).

So put a new battery in and started great, until the next day (wont turn over)

Took starter motor off and tested it, it jumps out and turns so thats fine.

Read on here about ignition switch may cause starting problems so made my own starter switch (the car now turns over but very slowly and comes to a stop because of battery being low)

So then charged battery with other car then started it up fine using my starter button!

Tested battery whilst engine running and was slowly losing power! so thought alternater buggered!!!

Replaced with brand new alternater but same problem, car will run fine but loses battery power as it runs so have to jump start every time!

Voltmeter was going down like this every 2 seconds :11.10, 11.08, 11.06,11.05,11.03,11.01,10.98 until it dies!

Would dodgy ignition switch cause this drainage?

Could it be dodgy wire from alternater to battery?

Would a short wire somewhere cause this rapid drainage?

Any tips would be great, i look forward to hearing from ya (please help, it's doing my tits in)

Was the engine running as the battery was loosing voltage with the new alt?

How's your water temp and PAS behaving? Could the belt be slipping?

I would have thought a short causing that sort of drain would be a firestarter.

Try measuring the resistance between alternator and battery terminals

Goth, Yeh the engine was running with new alt but dropping voltage, water temp is fine and PAS is fine, the car is spot on when running otherwise

I had to re-fit the supercharger for alternater replacement so the belt (which is only a few weeks old) is freshly taught!

I shall try the alt to battery resistance tomorrow

Cabrioman, will also check earths tomorrow, didnt think of checking them

Cheers guys (au)

Forgot to say, my new belt is about a half inch to small so the only way i could fit it was to put it round the A/C pulley the wrong way (so the pully is running backwards) I thought this was ok as i was told the A/C pump free wheels when not in use and don't use it anyway!

Anyway until i find the correct belt will this cause any kind of drain on battery!?

Just thought i'd let you know!

Well....... had a proper look over it today and found that i had managed to connect the alternater lead to an earth instead of the battery (what a Twat).

It now charges the battery on idle, however when i give it some revs like if i hold it at 1500 revs, it slowley drops volts constantly, then at idle it will start charging again.Isnt it supposed to charge faster with more revs?

Where does the alternater lead supposed to connect to the battery? My one is only long enough to reach the end of the starter where it gets power!
