Silverback 0
Hey all.. Well recently my turbo on my vr6 has started whining so i've been speaking to turbo technics about having it rebuilt.. My question is, in ppl's opinions is it worth rebuilding a turbo or just buying a new one? I'm using a t04 at the min and get 300bhp at 10psi.. I'm considering just saving that bit more and getting a gt35 but not sure how much more lag i'll have and if it'll be worth it as it'll still be running 10psi for now.. Comments, suggestions welcome.. Cheers
xyber 1
think i would get the gt35 so its ready for the future and maybe rebuild t04 as a spare or to sell on depending on price of rebuild

Silverback 0
Kev.... Suggestions please.. Lol
FishWick 21
I take it your T04 was silent, then suddenly got loud?Is it a whine or a whistle? The turbo can whistle loudly if the compressor blades get mashed by debris getting sucked in. Have you inspected the turbo for any obvious damage? I would also check the turbo is getting a good oil supply as the bearings can whine loudly when they're screwed. In terms of GT35 versus T04, What T04 have you got mate?Trim? Exhaust AR? Exhaust bore size? Internal wastegate or external etcWhat rpm do you get your 10psi currently? The most common GT35R in VRT applications is the externally W' gated GT3582R as VR6Boy says. It has a T04S cold side, AR 70, 56 trim and the hotside of 84 trim and a choice of .63, .82 and 1.06 ARs.I have the 0.82 AR flavour and I get full boost at 3500rpm and I run a 2.5" exhaust. With a 3" system, spool wil drop a few hundred rpm.I don't know what T04 you've got, but the 35R is a hard hitting turbo in the mid to top end, more so the latter if you get the 1.06 housing. It's got a lot more top end shove than my old GT30R turbos used to have. They were more thumpy in the bottom end, but the torque fell away quite quickly past 5500rpm.For a daily usable fast road car, I recommend the 0.82 housing.
Silverback 0
I'm not 100% sure of the internals m8.. I get full boost by 3500rpm which i'm happy with though. Turbotechnics said they could upgrade it all, so i'm wondering whether to get it rebuilt/uprated to a better spec.. Or to spend just under 3 times the amount and upgrade to the gt35... Very grateful for ur input kev
Silverback 0
Oh and suppose its more of a whine as well.. Doesn't do it every time.. Just now n then, thought i'd get it looked it before something did happen lol
FishWick 21
Turbos can also whine a bit if you're using an open filter (there's nothing to silence it) and if your turbo has a anti-surge housing. Usually off boost. On boost it should be quiet / silent. The GT35 is certainly a very nice turbo, but it is expensive like you say. Consider importing one?
Silverback 0
Last time i imported a turbo it was rubbish lol... Its annoying cause it only does it every so often.. Think i'm gonna take it to midland vw first to get everything checked over, unless u've got any recommendations of anywhere good to go? Not many places round my way.. Def considering the gt35... How much difference is it if i get my internals uprated on my to4 compared to getting a gt35? If i get the right internals could it be as good as the gt35 or is that a silly question? Lol
FishWick 21
If you like your exsiting turbo, might be worth getting it checked out / rebuilt etc. But personally, if it were me, I'd treat it as an oppurtunity to upgrade to the 35R :-)
Silverback 0
Thanks for the input kev.. Appreciate it m8.. Not many ppl around to give advice i always find so cheers for the input
FishWick 21
No worries. You'll have no trouble with the 35R, it's tough as war bunkers, so let us know if you get one! :-)
