VR6 slow to start - requires several cranks

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have a problem with my car.

The car takes a little while to start - cranks for a couple of seconds before firing up. The car will always start but i want it to fire straight away as it sounds rough when sat cranking it.

The engine is a OBD1 taken from a 1994 mk3 golf - now in a 1990 mk2 golf.

My battery is new and i have checked the started and earth cables are clean.

I have read it could be the cam shaft position sensor or the crank shaft position sensor.

From my research the crank shaft position sensor is located on the radiator side of the block but where is the cam shaft position sensor on a OBD1 vr6??

Also would one of the above cause my issues???

I have a similar problem on my car and i am pretty sure its the starter itself. But not yet got round to changing the starter for a new one. I found this link to a sound file of a car with a bad starter and after the starter was changed.

If yours sounds like that (which mine does) then it could be the starter that needs changing.

how long is a little while...? mine takes a few turns then fires.. but it's always been like that? i have had routine changes of alternator.. starter-motor.. sensors as and when they fail but car has always fired the same...

I have recently had a new starter fitted - when the conversion was done so i think i can rule that out.

It takes say two turns and then fires. It will always start but sounds like a car with a slightly flat battery and then roars into life. Almost as if the battery is a little under powered.

Does the vr6 engine require a heavy duty battery?? as its a big lump to get running
