SHARKY 0
Hi guys...As winter is nearly over (well as much as it could be in this country) I'm starting to plan a full body respray for my VR.I'm looking for a ball park price I should be paying. I understand it depends on the work and the colour etc etc, but I don't want to get ripped off.Basically the cars staying black and it needs new rear arches welding in due to rust, and sills (while I'm at it!). A new bonnet and boot, and other minor rust spots. Then I'm just wanting to make sure that everythings lining up as it should (shut lines etc). I'm not doing the engine bay or the inside of the car as I'm not changing the colour - just the outside. Plus a few other little "mods"... which I know will add to the price - just need to know a standard kinda priceMy leather interior is coming out at the same time to save damage (maybe retrimmed if the money is there!). I'm being told prices from £500 (no chance!) to over £2000! I know its not going to be a case of a few cans of spray from Halfords cheap, but feck me £2K plus...So what sort of price should I expect to pay - any of you guys had resprays done?Any advice towards this would be great.Cheers... xyber 1
All depends mate, how much prep is needed, type of paint, the finish (ie will it be wet sanded)I had mine done at xmas with all the best materials and about 70 hours of labour (some of which i help on, strip down, prep, re-fit)retail would have been £3000+ but my dad is in the trade so got it all discounted and cashed in favoursA company my dad deals with was asked just out of curiousity for a price with the spec I was going for and they said £4000No such thing as a cheap respray, only a bad oneeasiest place to save is if you down as much prep as you are able to as its the labour fees that push the price up, better you spend 10 hours stripping down that someone else charging you £30 an hour
mike 6
i was quoted a grand by a place, but when i took it in 6 months later he tehn wanted 1500...wich i wish id got a writen quote on the first now...didnt get a respray in the end, also teh mods i wanted doing was included in the1500...(smoothing) i had quotes of 3 grand form everywhere else, usually smaller places tend to be cheaper,,,
SHARKY 0
Hi guys...Thanx for the replies - so far. All I can say is WOW - £3000 - £4000 - FECKIN' 'ELL!!! Was that in GOLD or something! LOL :S The thing is the rust on the rear arches NEEDS doing (as does the sills and other bits) and I want metal replacements - not filler... I have managed to source two weld in arches and the sills so I figure I'lll buy them myself in the lead up, then the hit isn't as much, but as for doing the prep - I don't have the time. Unless I can work weekends at the place...Surely 3-4 grand is for an absolute blinding show car finish or a colour change? As for paint I'm happy with just VW black (mines LC07) and a couple of coats of laquer maybe to give it a decent shine. I did like Porsche black, but I'd imagine a few extra £££'s...Don't get me wrong, I don't want a crap job, but its my daily driver and its parked outside at night - hence the rust and little dings etc... I don't want a show car quality job...
xyber 1
you'd be surprised! 4 rust patches cut out and butt welded back fresh(both door shuts along the bottom under the rubbers, across top of screen and just above rear bumper on quater panel), the rub down and degrease is a long job along with the final prep of filler/top stop etc and sprayingThe pricey stuff on mine though was the paint and clear coat, I got brand new waterbased stuff, the clear coat is insane interms of how hard it is, ive been trying to wet sand it but cant find anything good enough for the job! 2000 grit wet and dry paper isnt really touching it so im gonna try machine polishing with G6 compoundIt was in the same colour, mystic blue, which as its a pearl it would be a liitle more pricey and we used 4.5 ltrs of paint and the same in clearcoatId say try and do a deal with the sprayers to go in a labour for them if you can or go somewhere smaller where they might fancy cash in hand work over a few weekend, it never hurts to ask as the labour costs is what mounts up the fastest and can give you a nasty surprise and everyone loves cash in hand!!! hahaPs. Trade discount on paint and materials can be upto 80%!!!!!! I couldnt believe it!!

hvr6 88
Depends what extra bodywork needs doing but you're looking at £1200-1500+ for a decent job any less and it'll have to be done again!
BAZ C 0
2 grand would be about right for the work your after for a decent job, get a £500 respray and it wont be great. dotn get much hours work for £500!!!i do this sort of thing everyday and to be honest5 charging less than that isnt worth it with the time that woudl be spend on such a job
Phat VR6 3
You could try and 1500 grit it and polish....worth a try before you get it sprayed
SHARKY 0
Hey guys...Cheers again for the comments so far...1500 grit won't get rid of rust!! So it needs doing, plus my bonnet was struck by lightning and it has cracked the paint it looks a mess as its going white?!It definitely needs respraying and de-rusting by chop and weld, plus I have rust around my offside rear window which means the window will need to be removed. Having looked around I've found a complete panel for the rear quarter so I'm gonna ask whoever does it to cut the panel out and replace it - that should save some time and effort - I think so anyway... It must be easier to cut the whole rear quarter out and replace as a whole rather than cut bits and weld bit...I'm beginning to think up to £2000 would sound about right then, seeing as the work I want/ need doing is quite labour intensive...Anyone want to buy some wheels!!! LOL I've only got NINE sets! hahaCheers so far guys, any other comments or help would be great...
gav_113 0
i work in the trade.. if i was going to do it for a homer i would prob charge 1500 all in..but getting a garage to do it u could be looking at anything up to 3500.. we had a scooby cum in for a full colour change repaint and my boss wanted 5K!!!i would say 2000 would be a rnd park figure.. xyber 1
If you go for it, id recommend R-M Starlux clearcoat, its like granite!! Well pleased with it
SHARKY 0
Hey guys....Again, thanx for the comments so far...Xyber - this R-M Starlux clearcoat is it dear? What sort of price comparison as compared to any other clear cost/ laquer top coat? Also, thanx for the offers to do the job for me, but the distance is an issue for me, if you were in Bolton, or local area I'd be in touch... How can a price vary so much? Some are saying over £3000 some under £2000. Even taking regions into consideration the difference can't be tahe much.Cheers for the comments so far... Any further advice is welcome,,,
xyber 1
Starlux- think it was £250 for 5 litres through my dads work account so got a big discount, should have been double that. Its worth the extra as the base is just a matt colour, the clear gives the final depth of finish, shine and durabiltyYou want to try and look at past work if possible of each company you get a quote from, or a recommendation from someone on here for example, get a load of quotes and go for the middle price, some will be cheap because they are crap, others will be expensive just to try it on. But end of the day your handing them alot of money so they should understand you want to see how good they are.
