VR6 Mk3 AAA crunching into reverse when warm?

Recommended Posts

I've just bought a vr6 mk3 golf and love it to bits, it's a low milage car - 60k - and had a easy life. 2 owners were women and the other only used it sundays.

Anyways, drives mint no problems at all except after being on the road for a bit and then select reverse it crunches when selecting, i've read the handbook which states leave the clutch pressed down then wait a few seconds and select reverse but this makes no difference. it doesn't do it all the time either, sometimes press clutch and select reverse it'll be fine, others it'll just crunch, if i pump the clutch pedel a few times it makes no difference. yet as i say other times you can select and deselct loads of times in one go with no trouble. if i wanna be really critical it's a bit snatchy selecting all other gears aswell, don't notice it on the road but parked up selecting gears you can feel in it trying to resist slightly when selecting other gears, but obviously cos the forward gears have syncromesh's theres no crunching.

i've had a quick look under the bonnet and underneath and can't see any obvious loss of fluid, but i am thinking of changing the slave cylinder first. Although the thought has crossed my mind because it's quite a low milage car the clutch cover springs are weakened though age & with heat it's just too much for it ? that said the clutch doesn't slip at all soo not too sure about this theory.

anyone got any ideas?

ok, i secured the cables out the way and made no difference, tried from 2nd to reveres, again no difference.

What i have noticed though is if i press the gearstick down and push towards the left, then wait a few seconds and move it forwards it's perfectly fine. is this how you are meant to change gear on these? [it's my first vw]
