Tips for running down the strip....

Recommended Posts

I'm planning to run down the strip for the first time in my VR on sunday at GTI festival.. so was wondering what checks I should give the car before hand at home..

1. Oil / Water levels

2. Tyre Pressures

3. Shell Optimax

???

....and any tips/advice I can use to get the best out my VR once i'm there (obviously empty the boot!) ...?

1) Point 1 is a must. You'll make no friends by causing the track to be closed. Although I'm not one to preach after dumping my entire cooling system under the gantry at a RWYB meet.

2) Lower than normal tyre pressures are advised but to what extent is open to question. So remember a pump/compressor to get them back up for the trip home.

3) Every little helps, including not having it brimming with petrol, extra weight! I'm sure you'll find some none sprinting members to keep a petrol can safe for you.

The seats come out quite easily too ;-)

15" wheels are supposedly better for acceleration. The main weight of the wheel is nearer the center so causes less inertia.

Don't try to race the lights. Your reaction time isn't included in your overall run time ( unlike drag races proper ) so take your time and stay composed. Helps you not to wheel spin if you don't try to be first off the line.

Traction off the line is a big problem. I've found you can't really nail a VR there until you're mid way through the rev band in 2nd. Wheel spinning is obviously wasted power.

And finally, practice makes perfect. It's addictive and the queues tend to be less than at other RWYB events so be prepared to do more runs than you expected.

Mmmm, after writing all that I'm getting an itching to sign on on Sunday!

ive also seen examples of this ... run closer to wall.. there is more grip there and there was a test of this with a 0.75 increase on average on a d reg jag and 0.82 saab turbo. they did several runs to check it was'nt "mind over matter" and nailing the launch right,,,it works cause ya get 6000bhp drag cars laying there tyres all over the centre.. so the old weathered rubber is a loss of grip!

dnt get too close tho.. or you may have an early retirement on your run!!

ok... i will try and lose some weight.. will remove what i can (doubt it i will do the seats).. and keep the petrol levels down...

i'm also thinking of removing my drivers side headlight for the air to flow into the air box with less restriction..

I'm glad to hear reaction time doesn't come into the time factor.. but it will always be hard cause you will want to beat the dude next to you...!

I've had some fun with others car from lights etc so have got used to the clutch.. launch of the VR so fingers crossed will be ok on the day...

Lets hope the weather stays good...!

just to let u know thet launching off a set of traffic lights is completly different to a strip.....it feels like you are pulling away on gravel!!, its so hard to get traction on the start!. It feels alot less grippy than a normal road
