It's not just late models...!! I have a 94 and its like Swiss cheese!

After a nightmare with the M8 inner CV bolts ( somebody must have used Torxvand damaged the 12points) and a rounded off manifold nut the engine is out....
I now have some room to sort out the engine bay

Old US punk... being an ex skater i grew up with Bad Religion, Black Flag, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr ... moving on to Stone Roses, Happy Mondays and the baggy scene for a bit, then grunge with Nirvana ( luckily saw them twice at Reading and Hummingbird brum), Mudhoney, Screaming Trees, Melvins etc... but nowadays I like pretty much anything!! but on my iphone i currently have tunes ranging from Metallica to Mumford and Sons, Pixies to Plan B (Early plan B not the soul stuff), Queens of the Stone Age and then Pixie Lott and Taylor Swift thanks to my 6 year old daughter!! Unsurprisingly it is the usual suspects putting comments on this thread!! Pete, Lukey, Daverse, Daveyboy and Nex... Where is everybody else?!

1) Are we doing anything wrong? - No
2) What is preventing you from contributing to the forum - I like to think In my short time here I have contributed a bit
3) What is preventing you from attending our events - 2 things... The lack of a running VR6 and family commitments ( 2yrs and 5yrs) very demanding children!! And all the very rare spare time I get is spent in the garage.
4) How are you making the most of being part of a Club? - using the forum and getting great knowledge from the few that post in here

Trying to remove an aftermarket alarm from the VR and just to make sure I am not removing it and its gonna cause problems, I am chasing the wires back from the splice to see whats connected to the alarm before removing..
I have come to the Central Locking Pump in the boot after following the wires along the sill (Drivers side) under the back seats and then into the boot (under the carpet) and then to the central locking module and Bi Pump... My question is this....
Why are there 11 wires connected to the module?
8 wires run along the route I have just described and then 2 more wires are spliced into the wiring just before the pump and then connect to the connector
1 Earth runs from the connector making the 11
Having checked the Bentley Manual all I can see are 5 connections..... Where have the other 6 come from?? ... Go to???
Cheers in advance

I think that arch trim was holding that part of the car together :-D good luck with getting it all sorted
Cheers Chaz..
I'm scared to breathe by it just in case another hole appears!!
Onwards and upwards

A bit of progress on the strip down front...
Cue loads of pics (For my own reference but may also be handy for anybody looking for info on bits and pieces on the golf vr6)
Removed the O/S/R wheel arch trim and found this
Its going to need a whole load of fabrication on the inner arch and then a replacement panel to cover the arch and petrol flap innards
Also removed the front wings to continue the hunt for the dreaded rust and YES, I definitely found it... Where the wing meets the sill...
And a pic of the N/S Sill and again .... more rust!
And an overview of the N/S inner arch...
N/S/F Brake Wear Indicator...
And the N/S/F ABS Sensor wires and connector..
And a shot of the N/S Sill from underneath .. surprisingly solid
But I'm probably going to change it anyway to check on inner metal
Removed the O/S/F wing and found it to be a aftermarket part (Points to either historical rust issue or a bump)
But again RUST where the wing meets the Sill
Overview of the O/S/F Inner arch
O/S/F Brake wear indicator
and the O/S/F ABS Sensor wires and connector
And then this..... Holy rusty holes Batman!!
Messy
And for good measure some holes on the top of the sill in the door shut
Its got to get worse before it gets better!!
Removed the rubbers from the roof gutter/screen surround and found a bit of surface rust on the N/S Rear
And the O/S Rear
And now safely tucked up until tomorrow
Cheers for looking and apologies for all the damn images!! (p)

Right .... Power tool purchased, flap wheel in drill and after a bit of work I had this... (After 80 grit)
I was quite happy with it and it looked good after the 80 grit but something was niggling me about the hidden bits and the bits that usually get painted...
There were cast marks, pitted parts and generally poor looking bits so I decided to go balls deep!!... So I now have this small part but I think it looks good.... Just six more to go and the sides, underside, middle etc etc etc :S
from this ( but other side of the manifold)
to this....
Back in the garage after dinner to carry on
cheers

Last night was spent removing more bits from the engine:
Fuel Rail. Injectors, lower intake manifold, Alternator, Alt and Power Steering bracket, Cam cover.
Removed so I can look at getting them polished or plated... Local company to me in Wolves have said bring them down and they will price it up...
But I thought I'd have a go and see how hard it can really be!!
So armed with 60,120,180,240,320 & 400 grit sandpaper, a sanding block and some WD40 I got to work...
The start:
From another angle:
And then I started rubbing and then I rubbed some more and carried on for two hours with 60 grit and got this!!
So I'm off to buy some power tools (Hand Sander) and I have already ordered a polishing kit from these people - http://www.metalpolishingsupplies.co.uk/
After speaking with Pete (VR6Pete) I am also on the hunt for some abrasive flap discs to get the metal down to a workable state (Cheers Pete)
How do people get the hard to reach stuff on brackets, alternators etc?
Help is again appreciated

Oh....!! And the earth from the coolant fan can also just attach to the "new" made body earth on the chassis leg ( the wire that would usually run from the coolant fan to the neg terminal on the battery)
Cheers again
-
Cheers Lukey
So the earth from position Z2 will stay in position and earth to the headlight wiring harness which in turn grounds beside the fuse relay panel ( so leave it alone!!) ?

Tried to draw a diagram for the relocation of the battery to the boot... I think the positive side of the battery is ok but not sure about the negative side...
Where does the negative wire from the battery to the back of the fuse / relay board attach, route etc...
Help would be appreciated

Just checked your thread on the So Wal site dude... wow!
Might need a bit more info off you on relocating the battery to the boot... Just need a overview on parts needed and basic instructions
Cheers Dude

You can say that again!!
Start a thread... The more the merrier and I might get valuable info from you or vice versa

Good luck with the project mate.
Did you ever get it started?
One thing I noticed in the video is no RPM reading while cranking. I'd say you need a crank position sensor' date=' just in case you get it all back together and it won't start!

Cheers dude...
Never got it started!! Only through lack of trying in the end! Just sat on the garage gathering cobwebs...
After having a good look I decided it best to strip down and replace/refurb everything - should've ok then ( fingers crossed)

Looks like the ambient air temperature sensor next to the horn
LOL!

Silly question.do you chock your wheels an leave handbrake off when u store ur car?
Nope!! ... The car had sat for almost a year with and brake on... And they were retry much seized when I bought it.
The car is now in the garage minus rear pads and a cylinder head from an aircooled split camper unde the rear wheel!

After getting Cabin fever being stuck in the back of my poky garage I thought today was a good day to give the VR a bit if sun!!
Just a couple of things in my way... 2 very seized rear brakes!
Luckily my neighbour had a big taxi and a length of rope so after tying the two vehicles together it was time to see if the rope would hold.... It did ^o)
So after getting some air in the tyres so I could get a jack under it, I got the wheels off to find this...
So after a bit of whacking, WD40 and some brute strength I finally got the pads out:
And thought i best to leave them out to make moving the VR easier in future
I will replace with new discs, pads and also Mk4 Calipers in the future.
The N/S wasn't much better
But put the wheels back on and we were rolling with ease... just not the stopping!!
And this is how it sat....
Started work on removing the last wires to the engine, starter, vehicle speed sensor, reverse lights connector, knock sensors, earth straps and labelled up the wires for future reference.
The battery tray has been removed which has left the power steering fluid reservoir kinda hanging there but I will find a new home for this later.
I also pulled the wiring from just in front of the wiper mechanisms ( in the wiring cover) and as I pulled it out the wrapping cloth just disintegrated!! Which is why all wiring is going to get a new coating of wrap cloth in the future.
I also found these on the O/S front wing area... any ideas what they are for?
And I know what the horn is before any quick witted comments :-p
Also this under the wing near the EVAP...
And just to finish off... here's a pic if the BAD side... (Needs Sill replacement, Petrol flap recess metal replacement and rear arch...
The work continues to mount... but I'm loving it!
Cheers for reading
