    The only difference between a 2.8 and 2.9 is the 1-mm larger bore of the latter. If you have a worn 2.9, why don't you give it back to VW as an excange for a new unit?

    Usually this is the heater air inlet ducting leaking around its base and is quite easy to fix once you have it stripped down. The new gasket is 1H0 819 166 and costs £2.89 inc. VAT from VW. Also, a poorly fitted or cracked scuttle trim can allow water to poor into the pollen filter.

    I don’t agree with this OBD 2 designation for post 8/95 AAA engines.

    You have the later throttle body with stepper motor idle control instead of the separate idle control valve and if anyone mentions OBD2, it isn’t. Remove and thoroughly (but gently) clean the internals of the throttle body (paying particular attention to the spindle locations) with a soft brush and aerosol carb cleaner. After it has been re-fitted, turn the ignition on and go into engine 01, basic adjustment mode 04, group 098 and wait whilst the throttle body adapts to the ECU and wait for at least 15 seconds and then turn off the ignition and wait for another 15 seconds.     If anyone reading this has a late VR6 (from chassis wvwzzz1HzSW120000 with the 021 906 258 CH ECU) and has access to VAG-COM, do me a favour, go into Engine 01 and click on Readiness 15 and post what it says.
