Hope you had a reply, but just in case I think I can help on points 2 and 3. The breather barrel is a common fault on the VR6 engine, I got a replacement from Ford for the V6 Sharan for a fraction a fraction of the VW charge. Re 3 I would check to see if the leak is actually comming from the coolant thermostat housing mating onto the engine. i have that fault and it looked like an oil leak at the rear.
