some time since i posted on here! 5 yrs after getting my VR 'bugs', the scruffiest VR in cheshire, i traded her in at the weekend for a 2002 V5. with 167k on the clock (99k when i bought her) the chain tensioners finally began to give in last week. it gets to the point, when only half your dash lights up, 3 of your windows don't work, you have a dented front wing due to the missus' bad driving, your auto gearbox indicator has given up the goose, and your chains are squealing, when you know it's time to call it a day. had to make a quick decision and found a minty V5 with 67k on the clock. and

Nearly a year and a half since I posted this thread. Bugs has now done 150k miles, chains still rattling and a few more rust spots appearing, but still going good :-)

i had a 1.8 gl mark 3 and was deeply impressed with the reliability. got to know the mechanics a bit then went into porsches. started doing a 100-mile commute and an 18mpg 5 litre porsche wasn't the best for that, so plumped for a VR6 as a compromise commuter car. still smiling - apart from at the petrol pump... duncs

i'd expect you can pick up the seal separately, why don't you go into a dealer and get them to look up the part number on their system? i'd expect the seal to be cheap although i've had vw parts from lodge sports before, they are based in the northwest. duncs

i had something similar. with me, it turns out it was the drainage hose from the sunroof drains - basically instead of being one part taking the water out of the car, it fits into a connector which is just at the top of the passenger footwell by the bodywork. this connector can come loose from the hose, duh! had to take half the dash off to discover it. a bit of fiddling later and putting the hose back into the connector, and hey presto, problem fixed. i'd suggest you check that too. carpets are still drying out 3 months later, mind.... duncs

hi guys my vr has about 131k on the clock now and last year was flagged in the MOT that the wheel bearings may need attention. my questions are :- are wheel bearings a common failure in high miler golf 3's? what should i expect to pay to get both rear done, and is it advisable to also get discs replaced at the same time? cheers duncs

I have heard there's some VW event in the Northwest/Cheshire area soon, anyone know anything about it?

I've now isolated the leak, it appears to be a trickle of water which runs down the side of the passenger footwell and then into the carpet. Hard rain brings about 1 inch of water along the passenger footwell. Likely windscreen seal on passenger side?

NPM i'm with you on the BMW 7-series some are looking serious bargains right now. Looking at my list I realise just how erratic my car choices have been :- Citroen AX (tin can!) Renault 11 (busted stereo forced me to use a ghetto blaster on batteries on the passenger seat!) Rover 216 (worst buy ever, value depreciated like a stone) Peugeot 206CC (great until everyone else bought one) Toyota RAV4 (school run saddo) VW Golf 3 1.8 GL (my love of Mk 3's began here) Porsche 944 (drove like a go-cart) Porsche 928 (wheel spins at 80mph :-)) VW Golf Mk 3 VR6

Hi guys, advice please. I don't have a garage, so my VR6 lives outside. Heavy rain over the weekend, and on taking my VR6 out today, I noticed about 1.5-2 inches of water on the passenger side footwell - both front and rear :-( No obvious signs of ingress - doorcards, seats etc all dry, as is the parcel shelf and area around the windscreen. No evidence of a fault with the windscreen seal, it is the original windscreen (my VR is a 1995 M-plater). Had the car serviced 6 months ago and had the sunroof drains cleared out then, is it likely they'd have blocked again so soon? I'm a bit foxed, any

Ok, apologies for another 'who has' thread, but I'm genuinely interested to see how much life I can squeeze out of Bugs. I read somewhere you can get in excess of 250k on a cared-for Golf Mk3 engine, not sure about the VR6 though. Please indicate mileage and if you've had chains done/new engine. Mine is M-reg, 127k miles, no chains or engine work *gulp*
