  1. Ever since I had my timing chains done, the car has been springing into life at 1200rpm from cold - lasts for around 1 min and then idles nicely again. Am I right in thinking that the ECU has to 're-learn' your typical engine behaviour after the battery has been disconnected? I'm just wondering whether this is a result of the car being held a at 1200 rpm to check for chain rattle after the chains were replaced. If this was done 2 or 3 times by the mechanic, is it possible that this would have fooled the ECU into thinking that 1200rpm was the normal idle on startup? Anyway, any thoughts appre
  2. I've heard a few people say that, but today I phoned 3 VW main dealers, 2 independants and VW HQ and they all said Gold!! ?! I presume yours ran well on the silver? Any idea why it's supposed to be better?
  3. My 97 VR is still getting through a fair bit of oil. Can't find any leaks and there's no smoke, so thinking of changing the type of oil I'm using to see if it makes a difference. I'm currently using Syntha Gold (as recommend by VW), but thought I might give her a go with the semi synthetic Silver stuff to see if it slows the consumption down - will this cause any problems with the engine? What do you guys / gals use? Apologies if this has been asked several times before. Any thoughts / suggestions appreciated. Cheers...
  4. I've got a 97 VR which currently has the original Sony radio / cassette player (XR-6859RDS) with no CD changer wired in. I've just got myself a fairly modest Kenwood KDC-W4527 MP3 receiver and just wanted to know if there's anything I need to be aware of before attempting to install the new unit (I'm no expert when it comes to ICE - even the basic stuff!). I guess it's not a straight swap, as the Kenwood unit was supplied with a harness adaptor with active antenna system. Is this right or have they (the supplier) sold me something I don't really need? Any advice appreciated.
  5. Problem is intermittent with the stereo / mfa. Car always starts first time.
  6. It might be coincidence, but mine has re-set twice when the temp has dropped below freezing over night.
  7. Point of clarification re the MFA - everything re-sets, including the time.
  8. Hello, I have a standard '97 Golf VR6 with 88k on the clock Couple of things bugging me at the moment - just wondered if anyone could shed any light on them... 1. Car is getting through a lot of oil. I estimate that I have used around 3 litres in the last 2,000 miles! I can't see evidence of any leaks (although my investigations could not be described as exhaustive), and I get no smoke from the exhaust (at least not that I've noticed). For info, I use Synta Gold (fully synthetic). The only two clues I have are that a) I can sometimes smell an 'oily' smell when the engine is hot and its
  9. Hello, My other car (97 8v GTi) needs a bit of tlc. Anyone got a rough idea of how much it would cost to respray the following: Drivers door Both wings Bonnet The colour is Maritime Blue, which is non-metallic. The drivers door has that characteristic 'Mk3 rust' beginning to appear on the bottom corner. I presume a paintshop would be able to prep this aswell as do the paintwork. I'm down in the south west (Exeter) , can anyone recommend a good bodywork specialist in the area? Cheers!
  10. Thanks for that. Do I need to take it off/out or can I clean it in situ? If it needs to be removed is it an easy job and do I need any special tools? Sorry about all the stupid questions! Incidentally, how can I get hold of the ETKA software? It would be very useful for a learner like me!
  11. Hello, The idle on my 97 VR6 has become erratic - sometimes when I start her up on a cold engine the revs fly up to 1200 rpm, sometimes higher. Also, the engine revs dip a little too much when I depress the clutch as I come to a halt, but not quite enough to stall it. I've read that cleaning the throttle body is a good starting point to remedy this. Problem is I'm a bit of a muppet under the bonnet and I'm not 100% sure where it is or how best to go about cleaning it. Does anyone have a link to a diy guide or even some photos maybe? ?! ?! Any help appreciated! Cheers
  12. Hi, Posted some of this on the newbie section, but thought I'd post it here too. Apologies if you've seen this twice... I've owned my VR6 for 6 months now - the car is a standard 97 R-reg with 87k on the clock, full VW history, and in pretty much mint condition. Car has always run very smoothly, except that the timing chain(s) have recently started to rattle. Seemed to happen very suddenly - over the course of a week or so. I've had the upper guide rail and tensioner replaced but the problem is still there. The rattle seems to occur at very specific engine speeds (between 1200 and 1500rpm), w
