  1. If you want a 6speed then go for the gemini kit from Stealth, bit more expensive than quaife but worth it. Probably about 3k though if you go for that with a diff.

Getting my gearbox removed, rebuilt with quaife, new clutch and refitted came to about 1400. Changing the final drive would add about 200, id probably go for a lightened flywheel and uprated clutch as well if I got it done again, that and changing the 5th cog for a slightly longer one and it would probably be near enough spot on 2 grand.

  2. Copied and pasted from another forum:

New for 2005 is GTI TrackShow, a major new event on the show calendar.

The venue is Donington Park race circuit, which is just off the M1 at

junction 24 and bang in the middle of the country. The concept behind

the show is simple: get the best venue, make it as central as possible and

then pack it with the UK's best traders and masses of show cars.

Throw in a massive indoor traders hall (no getting cold and wet here!),

together with exclusive GTI-only track slots on the Saturday and we've

hopefully created something that showgoers will really enjoy.

The event attractions are as follows:

Show and shine on both days with sizeable CASH prizes for class winners

    and best of show.

Massive indoor trade hall with restaurant and bar

Exclusive GTI-only track slots aimed at the novice for only £25 (pre-

booked) for a 20-minute slot with full drivers briefing. We also offer full

day passes for experienced drivers at £125 for the full day. Track day is

    on the Saturday only.

Win a GTI! One lucky showgoer will win a very original big-bumper Mk 2

Golf GTI 8V - simply fill out a form once you get inside the trade hall and

you'll enter the draw. The winner will be announced on Sunday and get

    the keys there and then!

We'll also be having the Dynomobile rolling road, as well as live action

events (probably tyre testing but still to be finalised)

FREE CAMPING on site. On Friday and Saturday night there's free onsite

camping available. Facilities are basic, but will include showers and loos.

If you want to stay in a hotel or B&B there are loads to choose from locally

and we offer a hotel finder service on our website.

There are loads of other things we've got planned, so it's best to check

out our website for the latest news. Full pricing and booking details are

    online too.

Anyway, we hope to see lots of Club GTI members having fun at the show

in July. Our aim is to be the number one GTI show within five years.

    some fun.

Sounds like it could be a good weekend.

  3. Im not completely sure ive got the maths right on this but I think basically with the 3.6fd the engine will be revving about 10% higher for each given speed, and with the 3.9 it will be revving about 20% higher.

With the 3.9 the vr would probably be hitting the rev limiter in 5th at about 135-140mph.

  4. At the very least go for the quaife diff, expensive but well worth it.

If I was getting it done again id definately change the final drive, standard is 3.3, sensible would be going to a 3.64. A bit mad would be going to a 3.944, avoid this one if you do a lot of motorway miles.
