Problems with immobilizer

Hi All,

I bought a vr6 highline last year on a p plate, have had no problems with it. yesterday took children up the local scenic site for a couple of hours, then came back to car, pressed the alarm unlock button on remote....nothing. Unlocked car with the keys....alarm went off.....tried to start car.....no chance. Lifted bonnet detatched horn from battery to save my ears....but alarm still going off as lights still flashing and car wont start. disconnected some extra leads going to live on battery...killed ignition. refitted, back to square one with horn disconnected, but immobilizer armed and alarm armed. Unable to switch off with remote control. Thing is dont know if alarm came with car, or if bought for car, original immobilizer or seperate...???? Its one of these full closure alarms...are they common with vr6's?? do i just need a new battery for remote????if so where from??? Or can any vw garage sort it out??? Really stuck here guys..if anyone can help I would really appreciate some advice.

Many Thanks,

Llyr

I would guess/assume/hope that any factory fitted system would unlock & disarm with just the key and on that basis assume you have an aftermarket one.

Most likely to have failed is the battery in your handset. Whether it is simply a case of opening and replacing, or having to somehow resynchronise with the system, I am unsure.

Also possible is that something in the location interferes with the signal from your handset. This happened a couple of times on my local petrol station forecourt with my old Rover 800 Vitesse - it simply would not respond to the handset. Fortunately it worked with the key. I would think this is made less likely by the location, though.

I think I would be inclined to open the handset and see what battery is used therein, without removing it. I would then get a replacement and swap them over, keeping the time that the handset is without a battery to a minimum.

Thanks guys, have had to borrow a car to go to work, will be back later, thanks for the number, will call him later if thats ok? hopefully it's just a change of battery thats needed, have opened up the casing all looks ok, just wondering where i can get a battery from for the remote, will ask Paul later if he is of a similar view.

Again thank you, really appreciate your quick replies.

Regards,

Llyr.

Just a quick update guys, as you rightly thought it was just a dead battery in the alarm/immobilizer remote, which was easily replaced with a replacement i bought for £2.99 from halfords. just a quick warning to anyone who may have the same problem, there was no indication that the battery was going to die on me, it just went dead. my advice....check what battery you have in your remote now and buy a spare one, keep it in the car.

Thanks again guys,

Llyr.
