Temperture guage not working and temperture warning light flashing

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone here, this is my first post and would love it if someone could help me out. I recently purchased a 1995 Jetta VR6. The car runs and drives excellent, but since the day I purchased the car the temperture guage has not worked (needle stays all the way down) and the temperture warning light flashes. I would like to repair the problem so these are working correctly. I hope someone can let me know what I need to do to resolve the problem. Thank You in advance. Martin

Check the connections to the expansion bottle to make sure that its connected, that takes care of the flashing light as its a level sensor thats in the bottle, also make sure that the levels is correct and IS a nice healthy pink colour... The temp guage is likely to be the waxstat sensor in the front of the block under the inlet manifold (visible standing looking on to the engine) I would be wary of this car as it has all the indications of possibly being "cooked" B) a common problem with VRs, check for "mayo" in the oil, pressurised hoses, lose of coolant, excess condensation from the exhaust etc... It doesn't sound to promising at the mo, as these are all the things that would be done to hide an overheating symptom i.e disconnect the level sensor, disconnect the temp guage.. !sad

Good luck! and keep us posted....

Thank you for your reply. I have had the car for roughly 3500 miles and just had the oil changed for the second time (first time the day after I bought the car), There is no mayo in the oil or excess condesation from the exhaust. I checked the connection on the coolant sensor bottle and is connected. Also I checked the connections on the thermostat housing and all 3 are connected there also (yellow, blue, orange connections). The car has no coolant leaks or hose problems. I did notice that the amount of coolant in the reservoir is a bit high. Wondering if it could be the temperture sensor? Thank you Martin
