Slim 0
A straight replacement from a breaker will be cheapest, around £300+fitting.Rebuilding is probably the best way to go but it's certainly not cheap. To do it properly, you'll be looking at 4 figures easily. Most people fit a lower final drive to make the car accelerate quicker (making it rev higher than normal), I don't think you'd find many people recommending you do the opposite.Your best bet would be to phone Stealth down south for a quote on a fancy gearbox. Slim 0
My car had a full gearbox rebuild by the VW dealer in Canterbury in August 2004 a few months before I bought it costing £1400. Unfortunately, one of the new bearings decided it had had enough less than a year later, which caused the box to implode on my way home up the A90.I bought a replacement one from a breaker, had to take a gamble on it being in good condition, and to be honest, it wasn't in as good condition as I'd hoped for but I was able to use enough parts off the fubared box (most of the bits were under a year old) to make one complete box in good condition.
