jb9999 0
I have just noticed in the last couple of weeks that my vr is loosing coolant. It is my first one(vr that is) and a tad concerned to say the least! It looks to be coming from the overflow hole on the expansion tank. If it was overheating I would understand but the temperature never goes over 90 degrees. There is no water in the oil and vice versa and no trails of white smoke from the exhaust when you accelerate, however hard. Has anyone had this problem before and know the cure? Any help for a novice owner would be much appreciated. Jim the concerned
katconcarne 0
first thaught is, it sounds like the head gasket- get the coolant system pressure checked to eliminate this. If it's not, it could be the cap on your coolant tank needs replacing. that's what mine needed when mine was doing the same last year, but it was clearer because when i gave it some grief then parked it up, it would throw all it's coolant out. good luck Jimbo, hope it's not the head gasket!Kat. jb9999 0
Thanx muchly for that Kat. Will a cylinder compression test give the same result if i can't get the coolant pressure tested locally? Hope its just the cap!
purple highline monster 0
mine has just started spitting a bit of water from the header bottle too! same cics as your no oil or anything etc, pressure is normal in pipes etc and no other symptoms of hg failure, sometimes if you fill the bottle too much it blows the excess out when it expands, its the design of the header tank overflow to get rid of this water, i had the same issue with my rallye golf and putting a new cap on the header tank solved it! so i will be doing the same again next week with the vr, header cap valves are a bit prone to failing after a few years use it appears! that said mines been on the car 10 years as far as i am aware as none of the full history refers to it ever being changed. jb9999 0
Cheers Nick. I'll try changing the cap before I condemn the head gasket then. If it doesn't cure it at least I've got a new cap!!! How many miles has yours got on it? Mine has just gone over the 92K, which is not a lot really for a dub. The GTi I part ex'd for it had 145K on the clock and it was sweet as a nut and the Audi sport before that had nearly the same mileage as the USS Enterprise and the engine on that was mint! The cap on it is probably the one it left the factory with by the looks of it,so may well need changing. I'll try and see what happens. Thanx again Nick. katconcarne 0
a cylinder comp' test wont giv same result as coolant pressure test coz wont determine if there is a water leak. if coolant pressure test shows pressure drop with no visible leakage then leakage may be into cylinder via head gasket failure. not to worry you mate, worst case scenario! it's most likely just the cap! it's not like it's a 2.9 (then it would defo be the head gasket!!)!
