Fireblade 0
I've recently been looking for a Golf VR6 Highline and with not much luck over the last few weeks as it appears the West Midlands seems to suffer from Golf VR6 anarexia.I'm now considering a Ford Mondeo ST200, how in terms of performance would this compair against a standard Golf VR6, they both share the same torque figures but the Golf has it at lower RPM 4200 instead of the ST200 which is at 5500, but the ST200 boasts 205Bhp as standard....I really hate buying a new car I am in such a quandry and really don't know what to do now Can any of you wise people give me some pointers as to what to do....all I know is it will be either a VR6 Highline or ST200.CheersStu
TVR6 0
Hi Fireblade, what a very brave man (I'm assuming you're male) you are coming onto this site with a question like that! Good thing we're a friendly lot who like to pride ourselves on our honest opinions. I dare say most Ford websites would meet the mention of most things non Ford with a few expletives! To answer your question, they're two very different machines in every way. Performance, handling etc. I would guess that the ST200 (not having driven one) would be fairly peaky being a 4 pot which means you would need to rev it to get the best out of it. The VR6 as you probably know has a 6 pot engine and is a 2.8 compated to the ST200s (2.0? please correct me if I'm wrong)The VR6 puts out a factory stated 174bhp but the later (post 96) cars put out closer to 185/190 bhp. You'll find that the VR engine improves with age and it's not unusual to see anywhere between 190 & 200bhp. IMHO I would say that the VR is a better bet as you getting german quality and engineering which means longevity. The VR has such a sweet sound and is fantastic on the motorway. All these years on it remains a very refined and potent engine. I would say that with a lighter body the Focus would be the faster car but a Mondeo is a bit of a porker and has a longer wheel base which would affect handling. Speaking of handling, out of the box, all Mk3 Golf have terrible suspension, it's waaay too soft and the VR is worse as it has all the weight upfrint due to that heavy power plant. A decent suspension setup is a must when you buy a VR. I;m sure the others will have plenty to say on this subject but for now I'll just say VR6
