Guest HIGH-liner
I've read loads of threads on this seemingly common fault, i've got a 96 Golf highline, the abs light has been on and off for about a year. Its only just become a propblem because of the MOT, I've replaced 3 sensors and spent hours taking them all out and cleaning them again but the light will always come back on, usually while breaking over a bumpy/rough surface. A Diagnostic machine has shown anything from all four sensors being faulty to just one or two. Its so far cost hundreds.Does anyone have any suggestions what it is or how I trace the cause of this problem, any help will be greatly apreciated.
Justicevr6 0
I'm afraid that is is a matter of keep looking although it dose sound electrical.I know this won't solve the problem but it would get the car through the MOT. diconect the abs light from behind the dials and conect the low fuel light instead, when the ignition is switched on the abs light comes on and then goes off making it seem as all is OK,Whilst this is not a fix for your problem it would get the car through the MOT and must be changed back and the cause of the fault found, if you had to do an emergency stop in the wet the ABS might not stop you in a straight line and could cause a bad crash. alanf 0
Are you taking the diagnostic machines word for it that all the sensors are duff? have you checked the resistance of a know good one against one of the duff ones? if the machine is bringing up one or two or all four sensors each time it's plugged in I would say you have a dodgy loom/plug somewhere in the system that is giveing the impression of duff sensors! check all the connections/plugs on the ABS block for damp/corrosion and trace the loom through looknig for further signs of the same!
