laquesse 2 Posted April 26, 2017 Report Share Posted April 26, 2017 Hi there, It took me while to write over here, I didn't know how to begin but here I am..: I'm having some problems with my V6 4motion 52 plate Golf. There is this rattling/knocking sound coming from the engine whilst warm only. When it's cold I think there's 'only pulleys' I'm hearing(sound like a washing machine being on a rinse mode running very slow), in short: When the engine gets warm(around 90 and more celzius) you can hear rattling/knocking sound coming from it mostly when you hit 2000-4000 rpm. My local garage had put their hands off it, I took it to a VW specialist in Derby) they were nice, they told me it's a timing chain, asking for 3k pounds to rectify it, which I think is a bit dear, I know they are very good and proud of what they do, and they just don't want to do this dirty and prolongative work, so they had asked what they needed to ask. Took it to another garage, which they recommended me to this guy who is doing engine reconditioning and rebuilding, I got to speak to him and told him about it, we made an appo.. but this is the case: I am aware of the DIY guide I just don't have tools and premises to execute it and besides, them(garages) I've been to, have never said anything about the shifter rod, which could be the case as well. Question is: Does shifter rod have the same meaning or a name In U.S.A as in Britain? Because it seems to me, like the garages that I have been to, never seem to mention the name or a cause of the problem, which is Intake manifold shifter rod knock. I have mentioned it at one garage and they said: '' Yeah we heard about it'' well that wasn't very convincing..I'm at my wits end and I just have to wait another week for a proper examination and then Yeah, It's my first VR6 and I love the car, I just don't want it to see it go... I'm aware that this is most definitely the timing chain and guides and all, but the garages never mentioned the possibility of shifter rod being knackered.
