The two new concepts indicates for the first time how Volvo plans to expand into the global market for premium small cars with a range of vehicles. The concepts combine bold exterior and interior design, and will be the first to ride on Volvo’s new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), which has been specially created for smaller cars. The aforementioned platform is smaller than the SPA platform, but according to the company will also accommodate a new T5 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid drivetrain, which will use technology from the S90, V90 and XC90 T8 plug-ins. The drivetrain will be paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, a three-cylinder gasoline engine, and electric motors. Novelty will be a pure battery electric vehicle, and Volvo plans to sell to sell 1 million electrified cars by 2025 globally. In terms of exterior design, both concepts share some cues seen on the Volvo XC90, S90, and V90, such as the front grille with Volvo’s Iron Mark emblem and Thor’s Hammer LED lights up front. The 40.1 features the familiar SUV profile with sleek and sporty look similar to that of the XC90, while the 40.2 Concept is an entirely different proposition and looks more like a sedan-like car.
