stevenh 0
When I turn my climatronic right down to LO I am getting a definite fume in the car, kinda petroly/oily smell - not too strong but definitely noticeable. It appears to be much worse when sitting static whereas when moving I only get the odd whiff and thought it might be exhaust fumes from cars in front being sucked in.I take it this is not normal!Does anyone have any idea what it might be?When I turn the climatronic up 1 to 18 the smell disappears but then the fan is not nearly as strong? (not completely sure how to work the climate control - no manual!).
mightyvr6 0
Possibly a leak from the pcv valve. Check the hose from the crankcsse breather to the intake boot for splits.
stevenh 0
Does that go from the rocker cover into the intake piping?

stevenh 0
Didn't get time to check today - had to go to Glasgow for work.Worrying new development tho - 5 separate times today, when sat at motorway speeds with aircon at around 24 I got a distinctly different smell - like oil had dripped onto a hot exhaust or something. The smell disappeared each time after a second or two and there appears to be no common factor for causing it.I did put oil in the car last night, since I bought it, the oil has been reading just above the lower kink on the dipstick - I presume the upper kink is max, lower is min?!Anyway, I put some 10w40 Magnatec I had in the garage - not a lot and the car had been sitting for over 2 hours so the oil level would have settled by then.It is very coincidental that today I am getting this sporadic burnt oil smell! - Any ideas?I will try and get a look around things when the rain stops - i'll have a look at the PCV when I get time to check the hoses.I also have a new noise When I arrived in Glasgow, pulling into a space in a car park I got a metallic 'thunk' when driving forward slowly and braking. Then reversing and braking gives me the same noise. It only happens once each direction, I then have to go the other way to get it again and the noise appears to go once everything cools back down again. Is there a chance my brake pads could be moving slightly? The car has had recent front discs/pads just before I bought it - wonder if the main stealer has not fitted properly??

stevenh 0
Took my PCV off tonight and there was oil dripping from the bottom bend (where it goes into the intake piping).Took everything off and the pipe was not split, and not too brittle so put it back together with some RTV silicon to seal it up - hopefully should cure the fumes problem. badboyV6 4
this is a really common problem- get some jubillee clips and put them over the main point its leaking- same thing happened to my last VR, and ive just cured the current one by doing this fix- or you could by the part from VW at a whacking great 150 quid! dubloke 4
you could always discard the breather gubbins and re-route a pipe to the wing with a small aftermarket breather on it, or bite the bullet and buy a pukka shiny oil breather bottle instead! prob just as cheap as the standard replacement from vw!
