Ok, ive looked through the threads on the site but cant find anything definate.

The top tensioner consists of one bolt and a blade of sorts (looked on ETKA) now my vw specialist tells me that to change this, the box needs to come out- is this correct?

I thought this was only necassary to change the complete chain.....

Advice as always, is much appreciated :-)

the only items chain related that you can replace without removing the gearbox are the runner that attaches to the side of the head, and upper 'bolt' tensioner.

the blade tensioner is very very frustarting as you you can see it, touch it, move it, but can slot it off its mounting pin as the lower cover is right against it, which in turn has the gearbox against it.

nah...its just the 'blade' that wears out from friction....never seen a prob with a bolt tensioner myself, though if someone removes and the piston moves out of it it will need rebleeding and sometimes that doesn't get done.

Just spoke to the mechanic- seems like ive been ver lucky so far (fingers crossed!)

Its the bolt tensioner that isnt holding charge apparently. 30 quid to sort- top rail and all is fine :-D

A few other bits to do though- CV gaitor, inlet pipe has a big hole in it!!!, meaning the MAF wont be able to do its job properly, and transfer box is rubbing against the bottom strut brace (he thinks) apart from that all clear!!! :-D :-D

Yeah Mark- from what ive been told by the mechanic, and on here- chuck an uprated clutch in m8- you know you want to! ;-) Mind you the hydraulic bolt is the only thing thats gone on mine- maybe the same on yours (as yours is a late model too)in which case its just cam cover off job...

So if the top blade etc needs replacing the gearbox has to come out - is this what were saying? Mines in at the mo having this done & if the box is coming out Im gonna chuck a clutch in it!

yep...top blade need box out, and not a bad idea to do clutch at same time...though mine had sh*t loads of life left so i left it. i'd go for another standard vw clutch unless you're planning serious power upgrades later.
