Help - Front Bumper Vents

As new VR6 owners we are not too sure what is right on the car. I know just about everything about MkI's and MkII's, but never bothered with MkIII's until now. (I have not collected catalogues since 1991)

The vents below the front bumper have no mesh grill behind them, making the a/c heat exchanger very vulnerable to damage. Should there be a mesh grill?
