Ignition Timing advance

I know a decent power gain can be made by advancing the ignition timing of certain engines.

Is this the case with the vr6 lump?

If so how is timing mode entered and what peramiters should be observed when changing the spark timing?

all done in ecu i think,you will need a chip /remap

So you cant adjust the timing using a strobe on the crank pulley and rotating the distributor?
