treoleileagh 0
Hi Forum,Just joined. Hoping someone here can shed some light on a new situation for me.Stopped the car tonight for a few minutes to wait for someone. When I turned the key to start : Nothing. No sound. No lights.I leaned on the +ve battery terminal and bingo. PowerExcept - No speedo. No tacho. Yep other instruments work. Instrument lights work. Everything else seems to work.Has anyone experienced this? Where should I go digging first? My car is July 95 build. Appreciate all suggestions.ThanksChris
VR6Pete 1,455
Hi mate, probably first thing to try new a new cluster and see if the problem still persists.
treoleileagh 0
Thanks for that suggestion Pete.I'm holding off pulling the cluster for a few reasons. The main one being it seems odd to me that both Tacho & Speedo go out together while minor dials continue to work. Then every now and then, speedo and tach come back and work normally. They go out together and come back together. So its an intermittent fault affecting both big dials but not the little ones. Those big dials must have either a common earth or a common power supply. But whichever, it must be different to the earth/power supply to minor instruments.I'm not very electro-literate so I'm hoping someone here can tell me something about how the cluster is built and wired. Is the speedo / tacho circuit on the same circuit board as the minor instruments? Or are the big dials on a different board inside the cluster? Are the big dials earthed separately to the other instruments? Are they fused separately?Since they go out together, speedo & tacho must either be on the same earth or the same power supply. How can they be on the same power supply (I'm assuming its power variation that gives variable read outs). Can anyone enlighten me?I'm just a bit worried too that this can be a problem inside the ECU. Is that possible? Thanks Pete and others who can help.CheersChris
