Changing Cam chain etc on Sharan

Recommended Posts

I have just bought a Sharan VR6 auto Carat and yes its has a few faults but it was very cheap.

My first issue is getting it through the mot which it did and only failed on a couple of bits which I can remedy fairly easily.

However this is now the family car and as such will only come out when we all need to go somewhere together so it needs to be reliable.

I need to do a full service and also I noticed the air filter was black so fitted a K and N I had here and now it wont idle doh!!!

So I plan to take off the maf surrounding pipework pcv etc and clean it all and refit and see what happens.

My problem is this. The previous owner said that he had not changed the chain or tensioner and he had owned the car for 6 years, it now has 118 on the clock so I am thinking it would be a good idea to change it now but that engine bay looks to be a tight fit and now I am wondering how much of a ball ache it is to do.

Tony did my last one of the Golf and it is straight forward on that but on this he thinks the engine may need to be dropped out. If this is the case how much work is involved, how much time is involved, if the engine is coming out shall I do the head gasket etc.

Has anyone done this kinda thing before and can anyone offer any advice?

I am not planning on getting rid of the car for a long time but I am not flush at the moment so I need to work to a tight budget whilst keeping the car safe and reliable.

For reference my Golf VR6 has a rebuilt enine by Tony and that has had the bulk of my money thrown at it. That has a new engine becase the guides broke and I bent some valves, I dont want that to happen again so preventative maintenance is always better in my eyes.

If money were no option I would make this 3.0 and get it upto 220bhp which I feel would make a good driveable mpv when fully loaded.

If anyone knows of a good vw person who is cheap and can come to my house in east sussex let me know..

Wayne
